While new guidelines on infant feeding recommend earlier introduction of solid food, our clinical experience suggests that many parents still believe they should delay feeding of solids, especially common allergens. The present study investigated maternal dietary avoidance; breast, formula and complementary feeding histories and intentions; and dietary allergen introduction in infants of Chinese parents in a private hospital in Hong Kong. Methods: Self-administered questionnaires about dietary habits in pregnancy and infant feeding intentions were distributed to pregnant Chinese women or their husbands; or parents of Chinese infants from 1 to 3 days old. Data were summarized with descriptive statistics and analyzed by Fisher’s exact test and linear-by-linear association test. Results: Maternal dietary restriction during pregnancy was common. Less than 10% of participants reported planning to breastfeed exclusively up to 6 months. Most parents planned to introduce solids when infants were older than 6 months, and even older than 9 months for common dietary allergens. Parents with allergic diseases planned to introduce shellfish and egg white later in their infants as compared to non-allergic parents, and fewer parents (5.2% vs. 11.6%, P=0.03) planned to introduce all allergenic foods by 12 months. Conclusion: Planning for exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months is uncommon in our study population. Complementary feeding of solids is often delayed, especially when there is a family history of allergy. Parents can be benefit from further guidance.","PeriodicalId":416547,"journal":{"name":"Practical and Professional Nursing","volume":"26 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133036631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abstract Incidents of users with comorbid schizophrenia and cannabis use disorder experiencing a relapse; have been a cyclic phenomenon for decades in most health facilities admitting users with such diag-noses. Studies have shown that cannabis use and non-adherence to treatment contribute to a relapse for comorbid schizophrenia and cannabis use disorder. Purpose: To report on a study conducted to explore and describe the lived experiences of users with co-morbid schizophrenia and cannabis use disorder, who have experienced one or more relapse(s). Methods: A qualitative, phenomenological approach, which is ex- plorative, descriptive, contextual in nature was used. Data was collected using in-depth phenomenological interviews on purposively selected users with comorbid schizophrenia and cannabis use disorder that were a psychotic but had been admitted for a relapse at the time of data collection. Data was analysed using the series steps from Van Kaam’s phenomenological approach. Results: Three categories emerged from the findings of this study, namely: Effects of cannabis use that lead to a relapse, factors maintaining cannabis use and factors discouraging cannabis use. Fur-thermore, these categories were each sub-divided into themes and sub-themes. Conclusion: The findings of the study revealed that schizophrenia sufferers who used cannabis, experienced negative effects of cannabis use, leading to relapse(s). Those effects were of a psychological, physical and social nature. Furthermore, it was concluded that the interplay between factors that maintain cannabis use, and those that discourage cannabis use in the lived experiences of users determine whether a user will experience a relapse or not.","PeriodicalId":416547,"journal":{"name":"Practical and Professional Nursing","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114313277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article provides a Family Nurse Practitioner’s account of the impact of a novel experiential learning nurse advocacy health policy fellowship in Richmond, Virginia. Ad-ditionally, this commentary details imperative lessons gained in the transformation from unaware politically to becoming a professional asset. Moreover, this highlights how nurses can and should be active in legalizing improvements to promote patient and population health and wellness. A program whose mission is to increase the understanding of the role of the nurse as an advocate is detailed, supply-ing a new lens through which to view and change the profession of nursing while impacting citizen wellbeing and patient outcomes.","PeriodicalId":416547,"journal":{"name":"Practical and Professional Nursing","volume":" 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131941893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nursing schools are responsible for adequately preparing students for practice while maintaining high NCLEX-RN pass rates. Method: To battle declining pass rates, one public, metropolitan institute of higher education created a mandatory senior-level course. The course included a variety of interventions, including Kaplan standardized tests. This study examined the effectiveness of the course on preparedness and performance on the first attempt of the NCLEX-RN. Results: Analysis of the data revealed significant relationships between baseline and final Kaplan readiness tests scores, and between final Kaplan readiness test scores and first attempt of NCLEXRN outcomes. Conclusion: Findings supported the RN transition course effectiveness in preparing students for successful performance on the first attempt of the NCLEX-RN.","PeriodicalId":416547,"journal":{"name":"Practical and Professional Nursing","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126478152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
