The leading cause of death for infants, SUID includes sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and asphyxia from accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB). ASSB deaths predominate, are largely preventable, and have been the focus of research, prevention programming and public health educational efforts targeting modifiable risk factors including hazards in the sleep environment. In contrast to environmental risk factors caregiver specific …","PeriodicalId":415613,"journal":{"name":"Section on Child Death Review and Prevention Program","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126428602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The swallowing mechanism is not fully developed in children under 2 years old, which increases the choking risk. Brain damage due to oxygen deprivation occurs in 7 minutes. On presentation, the patient was febrile to 39.3 C, tachycardic to 116 beats/min, and normotensive. Physical examination revealed morbilliform rash around neck, back, and trunk. Early detection of abuse is crucial as abuse often escalates over time. Despite this, there are variable rates and screening protocols of siblings, even among child abuse pediatricians. Here we describe a case of twin infants in which the index twin remained protected by continued hospitalization; however, the sibling twin met an untimely end despite undergoing screening for abuse.
