In particular, we propose that geosimulation can be used in close connection with virtual geographic environments and virtual reality environments to build human-in-the-loop interactivity between real people and geosimulation of the geographies that they experience. We introduce a novel scheme based on immersion and emission by socio-visual gaze to facilitate connectivity between human users and geosimulation. To examine the utility of the approach, we present a worked demonstration for examining road-crossing behavior in downtown settings for Brooklyn, NY.","PeriodicalId":403941,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on GeoSpatial Simulation","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121629842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many offline retail settings, product distributors extend bids to place and manage product displays within a retail outlet. The distributor aims to choose a spatial allocation strategy that maximizes revenue given a preset budget constraint. Prior work shows that carefully selecting product locations within a store can minimize search costs and and induce consumers to make \"impulse\" purchases. Such impulse purchases are influenced by the spatial configuration of the store. However, learning important spatial patterns in offline retail is challenging due to the scarcity of data and the high cost of exploration and experimentation in the physical world. To address these challenges, we propose a stochastic model of spatial demand in physical retail, which we call the Probabilistic Spatial Demand Simulator (PSD-sim). PSD-sim is an effective mirror of the real environment because it exploits the structure of common retail datasets through a hierarchical parameter sharing structure, and is able to incorporate spatial and economic knowledge through informative priors. We show that PSD-sim can both recover ground truth test data better than baselines, and generate new data for unseen states. The simulator can naturally be used to train policy estimators that discover intelligent, spatial allocation strategies. Finally, we perform a preliminary study into different optimization techniques and find that Deep Q-Learning can learn an effective spatial allocation policy.","PeriodicalId":403941,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on GeoSpatial Simulation","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114941759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Coinciding with this change, is the recent uptake of the '15-Minute City' idea in urban planning around the world. One of the hallmarks of this idea is to create a high quality of life within a city via an acceptable travel distance (i.e., 15 minutes). However, a definitive benchmark for defining a '15-Minute City' has yet to be agreed upon due to the heterogeneous character of urban morphologies worldwide. To shed light on this issue, we develop an agent-based model named 'D-FMCities' utilizing realistic street networks and points-of-interest, in this instance the borough of Queens in New York City as a test case. Through our modeling we grow diverse communities from the bottom up and estimate the size of such local communities to delineate 15-minute cities. Our findings suggest that the model could be helpful to detect the flexibility of defining the extent of a '15-minute city' and consequently support uncovering the underlying factors that may affect its various definitions and diverse sizes throughout the world.","PeriodicalId":403941,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on GeoSpatial Simulation","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124831153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The federal government issued the social distancing guideline of 6 feet to curb the spread. However, such static guidelines might fail to decrease contacts since they ignore space-dependent pedestrian movement. Therefore, we built an agent-based model (ABM) to investigate contact patterns when people enter a large venue, such as a sports arena. In addition, we explore the spatiotemporal contact patterns using space-time kernel density estimation (STKDE). Our results indicate a significant reduction of contacts when controlling the entrance time intervals (time between individual entrances to the venue). In addition, many contacts occur between individuals who move inside the seating section to seek their own seat and those who already sit. This implies we need to find additional solutions to reduce contacts in the seating section in the future study. This research could help decision makers to form detailed social distancing requirements, especially depending on the spatial structure of large indoor spaces.","PeriodicalId":403941,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on GeoSpatial Simulation","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129872501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
