These may include sharing information on the victim’s partner through ‘Clare’s Law’, also known as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme. The strength of this scheme relies heavily on the IDVA’s involvement; however, this can vary considerably for reasons beyond the IDVA’s control. This chapter draws on findings from research into Clare’s Law to explore how IDVAs experience and manage emotional labour in personal and professional contexts when dealing with Clare’s Law and domestic violence victims. It explores the impact of working in a crisis management environment and recognises the potential emotional toll such important work can take on under-resourced professionals. To conclude, the chapter recommends strengthening the IDVA role under the proposed Domestic Abuse Bill.

We explore the history of emotions in probation \u0000at both the level of policy and practice, arguing that whilst emotion management has always \u0000been a core facet of probation work its importance has not been fully acknowledged. Indeed, \u0000we argue that recent years has seen a marked marginalisation of emotions in policy terms due \u0000to the changing nature of what probation is ‘for’ and how its main purpose- the rehabilitative \u0000endeavour – is legitimated in late modernity. We then provide an overview of the – albeit \u0000limited – recent research which has explored probation practice through the lens of emotional \u0000labour, exploring what emotions are managed, to what end and how this impacts on probation \u0000workers.
