Studies in terrestrial environments have shown that species diversity, density, and length frequency often positively correlate with the size of a habitat patch, patch shape, and proximity to a patch edge. These patterns, however, have not been conclusively shown in temperate sub-tidal marine studies. Data from visual strip-transects collected from the Delta submersible were used to characterize fish assemblages with respect to rocky bank habitat patches. Specifically, the density, diversity, and length frequency of nearshore fishes were examined with respect to 1) proximity to the patch edge, 2) patch shape, and 3) patch size near Point Lobos and Point Sur, California. Diversity and length distributions of fishes were significantly greater at the edge than the interior of rocky bank patches. Therefore, landscape-scale patterns with respect to the distribution of nearshore fishes exist. However, this study also demonstrated that terrestrial paradigms are not directly applicable to temperate sub-tidal marine habitats. The relationship between species richness and patch shape was opposite of patterns observed in terrestrial systems. Additionally, patch size explained more of the variability in the nearshore fish assemblages than patch shape; however, neither were good predictive indicators of the density of fishes.","PeriodicalId":397885,"journal":{"name":"California Sea Grant College Program","volume":"337 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121244857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such increases in density can cause shifts in the prey use of generalist predators. This study investigated the effects of increased conspecific density on the diet of Gopher Rockfish (Sebastes carnatus) at a 35-year-old MPA at Point Lobos and four newly established central California MPAs at Ano Nuevo, Point Lobos, Piedras Blancas, and Point Buchon. Analysis of 710 stomachs collected in 2007-2009 indicated the most important overall prey were crabs, especially the family Pisidae and genus Cancer, as well as brittle stars and mysids. Diets did not differ inside versus outside the old Point Lobos MPA in terms of prey richness, evenness, composition, or Gopher Rockfish trophic level. Individual specialization, however, was greater outside the MPA. No consistent differences in these metrics were observed inside versus outside the four new MPAs, although prey evenness and composition did differ significantly among geographic locations. Diets at Ano Nuevo, the most northern and shallow collection location, were dominated by Cancer crabs and porcelain crabs, while diets from southern, deeper locations were dominated by brittle stars. The case study of the old Point Lobos MPA indicates that changes in fish feeding ecology in MPAs may take decades to occur, if at all. Differences in prey observed among geographic locations suggest variation in the community composition among central California’s new MPAs, which may influence the effect of each MPA on food web dynamics over time.","PeriodicalId":397885,"journal":{"name":"California Sea Grant College Program","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115561184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nereocystis reproductive material was introduced in some plots to examine the role of dispersal distance on recruitment. Nereocystis recruitment at both sites was significantly higher during spring compared to recruitment observed later in the study. Recruitment continued throughout the fall, however, suggesting a broad recruitment window. Recruitment success increased dramatically when understory algae were removed. Presence of a canopy (Nereocystis or Macrocystis) did not affect Nereocystis recruitment, suggesting that Nereocystis was not directly competitively inferior to Macrocystis. Greater recruitment was observed in areas seeded with Nereocystis propagules. Ultimately, recruitment of Nereocystis was controlled by understory algal assemblages and by the relatively short dispersal distance of its propagules. Additionally, the broad recruitment window for Nereocystis described here suggests that summer recruits can contribute to population resilience to late spring disturbances. This study indicates that given sufficient disturbance to the benthos and ample propagule supply, Nereocystis should be able to recruit and colonize new areas, regardless of the presence of Macrocystis.","PeriodicalId":397885,"journal":{"name":"California Sea Grant College Program","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133605342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At UCSB we were focused primarily on objective (2). We tested the following hypotheses to fulfill our objectives. Hypothesis 1: Black abalone spawning requires environmental conditions similar to their intertidal and shallow subtidal habitat, and not standard methods that were developed for subtidal species. Hypothesis 2: Quantitative real-time PCR can be used to quantify loads of the WS rickettsial bacterium (infection intensity) in abalone. Hypothesis 3: Juvenile black abalone recruiting along the California Channel Islands are more resistant to WS than are black abalone in northern Central California that have not experienced high disease (WS) selection pressure.","PeriodicalId":397885,"journal":{"name":"California Sea Grant College Program","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121455486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I examined annual survivorship of three size classes ( 178 mm) of red abalone from five sites in northern California and one site in southern California using capture-mark-recapture data. Survival was variable spatially and among size classes. Survivorship values were incorporated into a size based projection matrix model. Elasticity values were found to be greatest for the sub-legal red abalone 150 mm to 178 mm (maximum shell length) indicating that changes in the vital rates of this size class are most important to population growth. Current methods to describe the age-at-length relationship of red abalone are insufficient because shell lengths exceed those predicted by growth models. I evaluated the utility of analyzing atomic bomb generated radioisotope 14C in shell to validate this relationship.","PeriodicalId":397885,"journal":{"name":"California Sea Grant College Program","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129231422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Samples were collected in Monterey from 1948 to 2006 and in the Channel Islands and Catalina Island from 1999 to 2007. A significant (P<0.0001) decline in opalescent squid size and fecundity occurred in Monterey. The trend in monthly mean sizes was similar among locations. Monthly mean sizes were negatively correlated with fishing pressure; when fishing pressure was strong, smaller individuals were captured the following fishing season. Body size was also negatively correlated with hatch-month sea surface temperature (SST). Negative correlations between anomalies for monthly mean SST and sizes were found—individuals grew larger if a winter was anomalously cooler. In addition, monthly mean upwelling and body sizes were positively correlated during the juvenile stage. The ratio of males to females captured in the fishery fluctuated in all areas.","PeriodicalId":397885,"journal":{"name":"California Sea Grant College Program","volume":"os-23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127768314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
