This chapter provides an overview of the most current research, causes, signs, symptoms, and diagnostic criteria of bipolar I and bipolar II disorder and cyclothymia. A discussion on the differences in the presentation of symptoms based on child or adolescents developmental level and on differential diagnosis is included. Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) is described in Chapter 5; however, it is revisited in this chapter because it was added as a new diagnosis beginning with the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to capture youth who experience significant difficulties but do not have the classic symptoms of BD. The chapter ends with an overview of common assessment tools, real-life case studies, and questions for class discussion.","PeriodicalId":397498,"journal":{"name":"Understanding the Mental Health Problems of Children and Adolescents","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130885514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Psychotherapy is often the preferred first line of treatment unless the youth is a danger to self or others or is significantly unable to function. This chapter provides an overview of the classes of antianxiety and antidepressant medications (i.e., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, benzodiazepines) used for treating different anxiety disorders along with brief information on their side effects. Descriptions are provided of the core components of curriculum and non-curriculum evidence-based and promising practices, including child–parent psychotherapy, trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy, and two computerized therapies. The chapter ends by revisiting the case studies from Chapter 7, reviewing the actual outcomes of the cases and posing questions to prompt further discussion.","PeriodicalId":397498,"journal":{"name":"Understanding the Mental Health Problems of Children and Adolescents","volume":"275 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125841349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A description of the signs and symptoms and the diagnostic criteria for depressive disorders and issues specific to children and adolescents is presented. Suicide rates in young people in the United States continue to rise. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth aged 10–14 and the second leading cause of death among those 15–24 years old. An overview of risk and protective factors for suicide, warning signs, and information on intervening with suicidal youth is presented. Eating disorders are addressed in this chapter due to the high co-occurrence of eating disorders with depression, suicide, and the serious health complications that accompany them. The difference between the normal anxiety everyone experiences and problematic anxiety that significantly interferes with a youth’s daily functioning is discussed. The causes of anxiety, current research on the brain, and the development of anxiety disorders is presented. The symptom criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) used to diagnose anxiety disorders in children and adolescents are described. Posttraumatic stress disorder, even though it is no longer included in the same chapter in the DSM as anxiety disorders, is also addressed. Common scales and inventories used for assessing the symptoms of anxiety are included, along with links to obtain these tools or learn more about them. Since childhood trauma can affect the child’s health and well-being even long after the trauma has occurred, it is essential for social workers to be able to categorize the trauma to develop better interventions that will help prevent long-term traumatic effects. However, it is also important to understand the three major manifestations a trauma can take form of in children. Childhood trauma can cause, influence, or exacerbate how people cope with mental illness. It can increase the risk of developing risky, addictive, or criminogenic behavior like substance abuse later in life. Trauma can also harmfully affect a child’s development, resulting in negative life outcomes. Social workers need to be able to implement trauma-informed care programs while also making use of the findings about the relationship between neuroscience and childhood trauma for further practice.","PeriodicalId":397498,"journal":{"name":"Understanding the Mental Health Problems of Children and Adolescents","volume":"18 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129087452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
