A Practical Guide for third Year Undergraduate Students.","authors":"Michel Guirguis","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.3312030","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.3312030","url":null,"abstract":"This book covers a quick introduction to high school mathematics, arithmetic and geometric series, infinite geometric series, mathematical induction, binomial theorem, factorials, permutations and combinations, determinants, systems of linear equations, boolean algebra, orthogonal functions, Legendre, Hermite, and Laguerre polynomials and orthogonal properties. For example, mathematical induction is a proof based on logical assumptions of equations that involve integers of one number that shows the proof for the next number. It is based on the base step and the inductive step. The base step is to prove the integers based on a formula. The inductive step involves statement of one integer number that shows the proof of the statement for the next integer. The determinant is a scalar and it is found by multiplying the two elements of the principal diagonal and subtracting them from the multiplication of the elements of the other diagonal.","PeriodicalId":396981,"journal":{"name":"Space & Planetary Science Educator: Courses","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129194356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this new curriculum, students get to choose a track of their interest in the Senior High School (SHS) and one of these is the Academic Track with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand. In the first two years of implementation of the said program, STEM has recorded a significantly low enrollment. This was the main problem of this study. This study looked at the interest of the students in Mathematics and Science and correlated with their interest in pursuing the STEM strand. The descriptive correlational research was employed with the use of survey questionnaire. Data obtained was interpreted using the weighted mean, sum of ranks, and Pearson-r correlation coefficient. Results revealed that the respondents were interested in the subjects Mathematics and Science. They were confident in their scientific ability but only slightly confident in mathematical abilities. There was a significant, moderately high relationship between the interest of the respondents in Mathematics and Science and in their confidence level in Mathematics and Science. The very high relationships between the interest and confidence in Mathematics, and interest and confidence in Science were also significant. Teacher influence registered to be the most important factor affecting their interest in Mathematics and Science while Family influence affects their confidence. The respondents also showed interest in the STEM strand. Lastly, the relationship between their interest and confidence in Mathematics and Science and their interest in pursuing the STEM strand was moderately high and significant.","PeriodicalId":396981,"journal":{"name":"Space & Planetary Science Educator: Courses","volume":"283 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132568258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basis analysis requires the student to construct a decision tree using discrete probabilities. Further analysis can include the value of information and the value of control. The scope of the deicision can include Monte Carlo simulation once continuous probabilities are added to the base case. This case has been used as a quiz.","PeriodicalId":396981,"journal":{"name":"Space & Planetary Science Educator: Courses","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124296311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
