Reyes","doi":"10.25009/REMSYS.2013.3.110","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.25009/REMSYS.2013.3.110","url":null,"abstract":"Los polenes inciden sobre las mucosas provocando sensibilizacion alergica, sin embargo, en Cuba son insuficientes los estudios de estos alergenos. Con el objetivo de conocer el comportamiento de Ambrosia psilostachya, Amaranthus leucocarpus, Helianthus annuus, Rumex acetosella, Lolium perenne, Cupressus lindley y Cocos nucifera, se realizo un estudio observacional analitico en el Servicio de Alergia de Previsora, Camaguey. La muestra fue de 529 individuos con rinitis o asma y pruebas cutaneas positivas a los acaros, hongos y polenes. El 40% de la muestra estaba sensibilizado a polenes y tenia provocacion nasal. Fueron comparados, segun gravedad de los sintomas y los valores del habon: 3, 4 y 5 mm. Los grupos etarios, con valores mas altos de sensibilizacion, fueron de 6 a 12 y de 45 a 64 anos. La mayor prevalencia de respuesta a los polenes, fue para el sexo femenino. Ambrosia, el de mas alta sensibilizacion, con habones de 3 mm, seguido de Lolium. Estos dos polenes, tambien presentaron los valores mas altos de sensibilizacion para habones de 4 mm. Para 5 mm la cifra mayor correspondio a Helianthus. Los habones de 3 mm se relacionaron a sintomas leves y moderados. Los de 4 mm a sintomas moderados, mientras que los de 5 mm, predominaron en pacientes con sintomas moderados y graves. Los polenes constituyen causa importante de sensibilizacion alergica en Camaguey. Existe relacion entre las pruebas cutaneas y la prueba de provocacion nasal. El diametro del habon de la respuesta cutanea al Prick Test se relaciona a la severidad de los sintomas clinicos. {"title":"De-N-acetylated sialic acid is immunogenic and elicits antibodies that are protective against Neisseria meningitidis.","authors":"Gregory R Moe, Becca A Flitter, Jessica Y Ing, Tamara S Bhandari, Hardeep Kaur","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Recently, we showed that monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that are reactive with derivatives of polysialic acid containing de-N-acetylated neuraminic acid (Neu) residues are protective against N. meningitidis group B strains (Moe et al. 2005, Infect Immun73: 2123; Flitter et al., in preparation). In addition, we found that fully de-N-acetylated PSA (i.e. poly alpha 2,8 Neu) conjugated to tetanus toxoid (DeNAc) elicits IgM and IgG antibodies of all subclasses in mice that bind to group B strains, activate human complement deposition, are protective in an infant rat model of meningococcal bacteremia and are bactericidal against group C strains (Moe et al, in press). We show here that anti-DeNAc mAbs, DA1 and DA2 (both IgM), are reactive with polysaccharides containing Neu, bind to group B, C, W135 and Y but not X strains grown in chemically defined media (CDM). However, when the group X strain is grown in CDM supplemented with human plasma, DA2 binds. Also both mAbs mediate bactericidal activity against B, C, W135, and X strains with human complement.
