As a developed country, Singapore continues to face challenges pose by ASD. Beyond the family unit, parents of children with ASD experience social stigmatization and difficulties seeking communal support. Caregiving becomes increasingly burdensome. Parents may cultivate negative parenting that further complicates their children’s growth development. This paper presents a holistic approach for parents managing challenging behaviors influenced by ASD. Responsive parenting holds key in aiding parents with their daily struggles. The authors posit five components that contribute to effective parenting, namely mind-set, techniques, time, relational context and parental love. Together, they assist parents to assess and reflect their relational experience. Parents learn to customize their approach to meet the child’s unique needs. This will shape the parent-child interactional pattern and foster positive family relationship.","PeriodicalId":357453,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126778697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To date, much of the research has examined the negative aspects and consequences of ADHD. However, emerging research in adult populations has begun to examine the possibility that ADHD is not universally negative [1]. The present pilot study sought to gain a better insight into the perceptions of adolescents with ADHD and answer questions concerning their problematic behavior or symptoms and whether they hold positive perceptions of their ADHD. Three adolescent boys diagnosed with ADHD were interviewed and using thematic analysis, the researchers identified seven themes: Broad Symptoms, Feelings about the symptoms, Setting, Task-specific, Negative outcomes, Recognizing the positives, and Lack of awareness of positive attributes. This study illustrates that, overall, negative perceptions of ADHD were more prevalent than positive perceptions, though the few positive perceptions identified were congruent with the adult-based literature. Implications of the study and recommendations for the future are discussed.","PeriodicalId":357453,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127773307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has not been researched extensively with regards to the restricted and repetitive behaviors that are part of a diagnosis of autism. This paper reports on the effectiveness of each of the three main components of HRT for young people on the autism spectrum. The awareness training procedure was effectively used in the treatment of encopresis; the competing response procedure effectively used in addressing vocal tics; and the social support procedure was effectively used for caregiver training to enhance overall treatment outcomes. This study evaluated the theory of mind ability in youth with ASD compared to their typically developing counterparts using the Strange Stories Test. Method: A total number of thirty 7-15 years old youth with ASD were compared with 30 Typically Developing (TD) youth matched on age and verbal intelligence quotient, using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for children- Version III-Revised and Farsi translation of the Strange Stories. Individuals with ASD were also evaluated by the Kiddie- Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime version, Childhood Autism Rating Scale and Asperger Syndrome Diagnosis Scale to confirm the diagnosis. Results: The group with ASD performed poorer than the TD group on all the stories (P<0.001). Age in the two group were significantly related to all types of the stories (P<0.05). Verbal intelligence quotient was associated with all stories in the ASD group whereas it was related to only mental and human stories in the TD group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The participants with ASD performed worse than the TD group on mentalizing ability. Their poor performance on control stories needs additional studies.","PeriodicalId":357453,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131492311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
