However, due to constrained energy resources, WSNs incur coverage holes that affect the level of SLP protection. Existing studies have ineffectively analysed the effects of coverage holes on SLP protection. Noting the limitation, this study investigated the coverage hole effects. Performance of various SLP routing protocols was evaluated based on the sensor node utilization ratio, attack success rate, end-to-end delay, and packet delivery ratio. Then, considering the challenge of limited battery power in IoT sensors, the performance gains and limitations of the protocols were identified. Simulation results demonstrate that the data dissemination SLP routing protocol (DIRP) outperforms other protocols. However, the performance of DIRP is significantly affected by coverage holes. The results suggest that for DIRP to be viable in IoT applications, the integration of distributed energy resources should be considered.","PeriodicalId":351687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of ICT Systems","volume":"45 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139212574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies show that AI systems may outsmart humans, leading to an ultimate extinction of mankind. Therefore, the behavior of these systems must be controlled to avert potential use by bad actors. Recommender systems, which are variant of AI products, learn shoppers past data and predict items that shoppers may prefer. This helps in identifying items that may be recommended to the active user. Studies indicate that classical recommender systems allow untrustworthy data, tempting unscrupulous dealers to misdirect the learning process. This potentially defrauds buyers. This study introduces trust adjustment factor into the AI learning pipeline. We conducted experiments to test the difference in robustness of the trust-enhanced collaborative filtering recommendation algorithm against the classical counterpart. Prediction shift and hit ratios for the two sets of algorithms were measured when subjected to various forms of profile injection attacks. We found that the trust-enhanced variant of the algorithm significantly outperforms classical collaborative filtering recommendation in terms of robustness by up to 52% when measured by prediction shift and by up to 18% when measured by hit ratio. Confirmed by t-test, results suggest that embedding trust adjustment factor into recommender systems improves its robustness.","PeriodicalId":351687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of ICT Systems","volume":"25 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139273717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, weather attenuation, especially scintillation, has a massive impact on the performance of the FSO transmission channel. This paper evaluates link availability and effect of scintillation on FSO performance in terms of eye diagrams, Bit Error Rate (BER), Q-factor, and signal-to noise ratio. Our work used data collected from January 2018 to December 2021 by Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) in Mwanza and Arusha regions for link availability and performance analysis. Simulation was performed to determine the FSO link availability, and we analyzed the scintillation effect on FSO performance using Submarine Laser Communication II and Hufnagel Valley (HV) day prediction models. It is observed that the HV day model performs better in predicting scintillation intensity compared to the former. In both regions, for the same transmission power of 20 dBm, the signal quality is better for a distance of 6 km where the BER value is found to be 10-8. These results suggest that, to achieve high-speed data transmissions, the maximum separating distance between FSO transceivers should not exceed 6 km.","PeriodicalId":351687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of ICT Systems","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125859067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in order to provide broadband services, service providers must incur high deployment costs and should wait for a long time for return on investments. Long-Term Evolution (LTE) has been proposed to overcome high deployment cost, although this technology suffers from poor coverage in rural areas. Thus, massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) with its favorable propagation phenomenon can be exploited as an alternative solution to boost signal coverage in rural areas. The current study compared the performance of broadband networks for Tanzanian rural areas based on massive MIMO technology and LTE. Performance comparison is confined to Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), User Signal-Interference Noise Ratio (SINRu) and Downlink (DL) throughput metrics for 5 MHz, 10 MHz and 20 MHz channel bandwidths at 2.1 GHz and 700 MHz carrier frequencies. The results show that, in terms of RSRP and SINRu, the performance of massive MIMO network at 5 MHz is higher than that of conventional LTE networks at 10 MHz and 20 MHz. Massive MIMO network performs better at lower channel bandwidth, making it more suitable for deployment in rural areas.","PeriodicalId":351687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of ICT Systems","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126963776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, determining accurately end-users' satisfaction based on network parameters remains a challenge. Existing research often uses network parameters, such as packet loss, delay, and jitter, to estimate users' Quality of Experience (QoE). However, most models present QoE estimates in Mean Opinion Scores (MoS), which are not easily understood by the customers. In this study, we used the Taguchi approach to conduct QoE experiments over a wireless tested. We investigated the simultaneous effects of packet loss, corruption, delay, and jitter on video streaming QoE, as well as their interaction effects. Furthermore, we developed a Fuzzy logic model in MatlabR2016a to establish the relationship between input variables and video streaming QoE. The model presents the results in an easily understandable linguistic terms such as excellent, good, average, bad, and poor. Additionally, the proposed model achieves a correlation of 0.875 between the predicted and user scores, with a Root Mean Square Error of 0.344.","PeriodicalId":351687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of ICT Systems","volume":"1863 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128928425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the current interest in blockchains globally, there has been unsatisfactory progress of this promising technology in developing countries, including Tanzania. One factor hindering the advancement of blockchain in the country is the lack of knowledge of the technology itself. Challenged by the situation, this study implemented a blockchain lab to provide a platform for users to explore and practice various concepts of blockchain. This online lab, called Dinari, was implemented using Ethereum blockchain and was hosted on a cloud server. Experiments were conducted to verify the performance of the developed lab. Results from the experiment show that the platform gives an average transaction processing time of 15.17 seconds. The processing times were within an acceptable range of performance when compared with other online platforms, such as Mainnet and Kovan that provide average processing times of between 8.8 seconds and 18.3 seconds. The study can be scaled up in future to deploy more use cases, including health, in addition to the existing payment use case.","PeriodicalId":351687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of ICT Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127020207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work we exploit the power of mathematics plugin (System for Teaching and Assessment using Computer Algebra Kernel - STACK) embedded within Moodle to conduct online tutorials for Numerical Analysis; undergraduate second year course taught in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic years at theUniversity of Dar es Salaam. Varieties of randomized questions were authored to cover the content of the coursewhile testing different learning objectives exhausting direct and iterative computations, analytical and guided proofs. Students got feedback of their work immediately from their anticipated mistakes. Students' participation and engagement in the tutorials are promising. Final scores do not show any negative impact from the application of online tutorials. Handling of online tutorials is important as number of students enrolled every year is increasing disproportionally with the available teaching staffs. This can also be appropriate tool for both delivering mathematics content interactively and assessing mathematics learning when meetings between teachers and students are limited (e.g. during pandemic period) or not necessary (e.g. distance learning programmes).","PeriodicalId":351687,"journal":{"name":"Journal of ICT Systems","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121220191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
