However, several matters have to be settled. That the relation between the applied stress and COD can be evaluated correctly only in an ideal state is among them. For this reason, difficulties are often encountered when an assessment of degree of safety against brittle fracture of structural members is attempted on the basis of the COD concept. In this paper, the author proposes a simplified method for evaluating the relationship between applied stress and COD under a unified process as a breakthrough for this problem. By the use of the proposed method, estimation of COD under complex conditions, analytical approach to which has been unavailable so far, and in reverse, evaluation of fracture strength from delta sub c value are attempted whereby the adequacy of the proposed method is discussed. Additional discussions are made on the relationship between the COD obtained by the proposed method and the overall strain.","PeriodicalId":342940,"journal":{"name":"IHI engineering review","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131151418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, many various facilities for cultivating marine products as well as port and harbor facilities, which used to be installed usually in the shallow waters of a bay, are obliged to be hereafter installed facing the open sea exposed to severe natural conditions. Under these circumstances, the development of the wave reducing device to protect those facilities from high waves surging from the offing has come to be a pressing necessity. To meet the above requirements, IHI has recently developed the floating breakwater through various tank tests and bench tests of mooring parts. The designing techniques of these facilities have been developed based on accumulated field data, laboratory test data and theoretical analysis. Several sea trials were conducted on the full-scale floating breakwater; as a result, the IHI floating breakwater proved to have excellent high wave reducing efficiency and high reliability. The first L type IHI foating breakwater was delivered to Saga Prefecture in November 1977 and is now in successful operation. This paper presents an outline of the development process, test results and design technique of the IHI floating breakwater.","PeriodicalId":342940,"journal":{"name":"IHI engineering review","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125413189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
