It is a serial pattern that has a symmetrical appearance. The spatial symmetry in this fragment is repeated and transformed by Debussy in an attempt to graphically capture lofty Gothic arches with his cathedral music, La Cathedrale engloutie. Mathematical learning theory, in particular the simple linear and the N-element pattern model, generated an interest in the probability-matching phenomenon. As this interest grew, research in sequential responding, in general, increased. A decade’s research culminated in the rejection of the original models, primarily as a result of their failure to capture aspects of selective memory and hypothesis-testing in sequential strategies. A prediction task attempts to capture dynamic aspects of our response to speech or music by placing the subject within a temporal succession of events. Figure-ground relations are important ingredients of Garner’s approach to pattern processing.","PeriodicalId":342356,"journal":{"name":"Human Information Processing","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117049161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A computing system is of little value to a user unless there is some way to issue commands to the machinery. In order to do this there must be a language in which the user can state what is to be done, and which can then be translated, by some automated process, into a sequence of elementary machine operations. Real-time computing systems often refer to data banks in order to determine how to handle a current request for services. The organization and modification of long-term memory is clearly a central topic in psychology, but it cannot be said that research has shed a great deal of light on the problem. Means-end analysis is inherently tied to the propositional form of data representation. Subproblem generation might use either an image or propositional notation. Clearly the distinction between image and proposition is important for computer problem solving.","PeriodicalId":342356,"journal":{"name":"Human Information Processing","volume":"146 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116050114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The terminology of the \"new\" psychology bas been almost completely drawn from the above disciplines, but very recently investigators have become less self-conscious about employing mentalistic terms and concepts that would have brought applause from the structuralists and phenomenologists of yesteryear (see, e.g., Boring, 1950). Althoagh skirting the interesting questions involving possible fruits and pitfalls of this trend, I might simply note that this chapter continues. after the introduction, in the recent tradition of use of information-processing argot. ln the present approach, we go inside the human qua information processor to as shallow or deep a level as we care to, and seize upon an abstract black box residing there in the processing chain. We shall think of our black box as engaging in the processing of some finite number of inputs (or elements). Methodological and theoretical issues are raised concerning the logic of experimentation in which reaction time is the major dependent variable and the limitations of interpretation of reaction time in the presence of variable error rates. The relationship between the speed and the accuracy of performance and theoretical models underlying this relation are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":342356,"journal":{"name":"Human Information Processing","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1973-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121145696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
