{"title":"A glimpse of the “new normal” in online language learning and teaching","authors":"Kasumi Arciaga","doi":"10.33369/joall.v8i2.29859","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33369/joall.v8i2.29859","url":null,"abstract":"The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly promoted online foreign language learning and teaching, given in the situation of the widespread lockdowns globally. Most of Southeast Asian countries took harsher approach to the pandemic. In the context of the Philippines, where in-person school operations were prohibited for a continuous period of 20 months, the impact of these restrictions has been unmistakable. This study aims to explore and highlight the experiences of online language learners and teachers during the Covid-19 pandemic. Research in this area remains limited due to the recent conclusion of the pandemic. In the present study, eight foreign language teachers participated in the focus groups, and eight language learners took part in one-on-one interviews. Through thematic analysis, the findings of this study unveiled a notable trend, which are that learners exhibited a strong preference for online classes, while teachers expressed an equitable preference for both online and face-to-face instruction. This divergence in preferences signifies a dynamic shift in the landscape of language education. The purpose of this study is to describe the language acquisition in terms of phonology and syntax of 2-year-old children in Kimono Mom YouTube channel episode 1 to 4. The data source of this research is \"Kimono Mom\" YouTube channel, episode 1 to episode 4 and the data in the study are utterances expressed by a Japanese child named Sutan who lives with his father and mother in Tokyo, Japan. In his daily life Sutan often communicates with his parents, especially with his mother named Moe. This research is descriptive qualitative research with the method of note taking method and library research. The theory used is the theory of language acquisition in terms of phonology and syntax. The results show that in terms of phonology Sutan can pronounce all vowel sounds except the vowel sound [ɯ]. Sutan can pronounce all consonant sounds perfectly except consonant sounds [ŋ], [ʦ] and [ʣ], as well as consonant sound [ʤ] located at the beginning of the word. In addition, Sutan can pronounce all the special phoneme sounds of Japanese except the double vowel sound (chou boin). This research applied Development Design Research (DDR) approach and involved several parties related to the development of the EMBOS module, namely high school English teachers and experts. Data were collected by using Focus Group Discussion. The data were analyzed qualitatively using the N-VIVO software, and the quantitative data were analyzed using the Fuzzy Delphi and Aiken's V methods. Needs analysis using the Group Interview method or Focus Group Discussion resulted in several issues or themes. The results of expert approval using the Fuzzy Delphi method found that the Mappadendang topic received approval in the song/narrative material with a Threshold (d) value of 0.038 and an average of Fuzzy Number 0.787. The topic of Mappadinding received approval on the Explanation Text/ Description Text material with a Threshold (d) value of 0.038 and an average fuzzy number of 0.787. Nene Malomo's topic on Traditional Story/Narrative Text/Reading Comprehension material with a Threshold (d) value of 0.038 and an average of Fuzzy Number 0.787. Developing an English learning module based on Bugis Local Wisdom consists of the beginning, content and the end. Experts have validated the EMBOS module. The results of expert validation indicate that this module is generally suitable for use in learning English at the high school level or equivalent. In line with the task-based language teaching approach and Ellis's framework for designing task-based lessons, the study investigates the students' practices of creating meaning and their reflections on using DMM. The research consists of three main stages: pre-task, during-the-task, and post-task activities. Twenty-three students enrolled in a Business English course participated in the study, and qualitative data, including business plan diagrams, student-created business plans, and reflection sheets, were collected and analyzed. The findings reveal that the students reflected positively on their experience with DMM, as the task stimulated their active participation, exploration, autonomy, and engagement throughout the writing process. This study contributes to the existing literature on task-based language teaching by examining the effectiveness of Digital Mind Mapping in facilitating students' business planning and organizational skills. The foci include revealing the students’ perspectives towards such a hybrid implementation as well as theoretical justifications to the significances of EXIT integration and digital-platform base worksheet in reading activities. This descriptive qualitative study took place in a state university in North Sumatera ad involved 30 students of English education taking Writing class. Questionnaire, interview, and documentation were used to collect the data. The qualitative data were then analyzed to meet triangulation data validity. It was found that the students perceive the significances of EXIT integration and roles of digital-platform base worksheet are oriented to optimize their reading comprehension. Documentation also showed the students’ interests and motivation in EXIT using digital-platform base improved. In general, ecology-based research is not a new discovery. However, this research provides a new dimension related to the concept of Freedom to Learn. The concept of ecology has a direction for adapting education to the needs of students, as with independent learning which wants education to go according to the needs and characteristics of different students. Freedom to learn brings the same passion to concretize ecology-based education. The research data shows that 59% of students in SMA 1 Limapuluh, SMA 1 Asahan, SMA 1 Tanjungbalai and SMK 4 Tanjungbalai, assess that the Indonesian language subject matter teaching materials that have been used so far do not contain ecological content related to nature, the environment and their own culture. The teacher explained that this had an impact on 1) the difficulty of the teacher in providing examples, 2) the difficulty of students understanding the material and 3) the material being incompatible with the real life of students. Of course this is a problem. This research resulted in a conceptual understanding that the teacher's difficulty in providing examples of learning and the teacher's difficulty in relating material to the real life of students is due to the unfulfilled ecological dimension. This ecological dimension can be fulfilled by linking environmental values into materials, tests and assessments. The solution that can be offered from this article is to present Indonesian language subject materials based on local ecology.
