In this work, a standard expert system is proposed for the particular WTA problem. The idea is to build expert system using grid partitioning over a training set. The proposed system is implemented and tested with a number of randomly generated WTA instances. The proposed system has a satisfactory performance.","PeriodicalId":330497,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer & Telecommunication Systems","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133838135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose an interactive tool to display, explore, and understand network traffic focusing on anomalies. It displays traffic on different temporal and spatial (address and port) scales and lets users navigate network data by using a simple interface. Different graphical representations are used to highlight anomalies quickly, and textual packet information about corresponding plotted points are provided. The proposed tool provides good support for understanding traffic behavior and for evaluating the effectiveness of anomaly detection method. The tool directly reads dump files and uses no intermediate database in daily operations. This paper demonstrates several examples emphasizing specific patterns for various anomalies.","PeriodicalId":330497,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer & Telecommunication Systems","volume":"38 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134146014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a large extent, this is due to the fact that Internet was originally designed to provide only a best-effort packet delivery service. In recent years, Service Overlay Networks (SONs) have emerged as a profitable way to leverage these issues without changing the underlying infrastructure. In this paper, we address the topology design problem of a SON from a performance point of view. Since the analytical solution of the problem is too computationally complex, we compare the performance of some well-known topologies and we also propose a new traffic demand aware overlay topology. Through extensive simulations, we investigate the performance of each overlay topology in different network scenarios, taking into account overhead and accepted traffic between the overlay nodes.","PeriodicalId":330497,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer & Telecommunication Systems","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125712947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

General arrival traffic is modelled by means of Gamma-distributed interarrival times. The analysis is formulated in terms of virtual traffic flows within the optical switch from which we derive expressions for burst blocking probability, fibre delay line occupancy and mean delay. Emphasis is on approximations that give good numerical efficiency so that the method can be useful for formulating dimensioning problems for large-scale networks. Numerical solution values from the proposed analysis method compare well with results from a discrete-event simulation of an optical burst switch.","PeriodicalId":330497,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer & Telecommunication Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130717552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
