For this experimental demonstration, continuous bandwidth tuning from 5 to 10 GHz and central frequency positioning over a 70 GHz-wide range while preserving a large out-of-band power rejection of up to more than 40 dB are observed. The circuit exploits optical-to-RF mapping of the transfer function of a programmable photonic integrated optical filter through a scanning sideband provided by an on-chip silicon phase modulator, and additional control of the MWP filter RF gain for optimized performance. A high level of functional integration is demonstrated in a compact footprint of less than 2 mm2. Measurements conducted on a different photonic integrated filter design illustrate the potentiality for scaling down the bandwidth reconfigurability of the MWP filter in the 1-to-3 GHz range or below.","PeriodicalId":320587,"journal":{"name":"2022 International Workshop on Fiber Optics in Access Networks (FOAN)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124587700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, dedicated optical links in point-to-point (P2P) technology were typically carried to cellular base-stations. So far, P2MP optical networks have not been used in cellular networks. With the arrival of fifth-generation (5G) cellular networks, with their extremely high-performance requirements and the concept of a huge number of small cells, mobile operators are facing the new challenge of how to connect a growing number of base-stations to the network that would ensure sufficient capacity with a sufficiently low latency and cost efficiency. This article provides an overview and analysis of currently available and future optical technologies that will be able to solve the challenge of the convergence of optical access networks (OANs) and radio access networks (RANs). It is critical for telecom network operators to ensure that interconnect-technology costs do not negate the savings that derive from a centralized cellular architecture (C-RAN).","PeriodicalId":320587,"journal":{"name":"2022 International Workshop on Fiber Optics in Access Networks (FOAN)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126567707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, in order to deliver seamless and high-speed data connectivity to the end-users, we propose an all optical hybrid optical link by integrating passive optical network (PON) with free-space optical (FSO) links. Additionally, we have also incorporated Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) to enhance data capacity of the proposed link. The proposed link can achieve data transfer rate of 20 Gbps using LG modes of the order of 00 and 01. Despite adverse link conditions due to fog attenuation, it is observed that the required signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the proposed link for delivering forward error correction (FEC) compatible bit error rate (BER) of 10−3 increases only by 19.3% as severity of fog conditions changes from light to heavy. The proposed link exhibits reasonable performance stability as no significant deviations are observed even when the data rate is doubled.","PeriodicalId":320587,"journal":{"name":"2022 International Workshop on Fiber Optics in Access Networks (FOAN)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131375515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The temperature dependence of the silicon-on-insulator photonic integrated circuit (PIC) accommodating the MRR results in a resonance drift, corrupting the initially configured optimal alignment of the resonant dip and the undesired sideband. The proposed stabilization concept introduces a feedback-control system employing the otherwise unused drop port of the MRR to provide the so-called process variable to the control system. The objective of this control system is to maintain the maximum optical power at the drop port through tuning the laser (carrier) wavelength.","PeriodicalId":320587,"journal":{"name":"2022 International Workshop on Fiber Optics in Access Networks (FOAN)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117293401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
