It examines how social issues are debated and negotiated within Salafi circles. The ʿulama may be politically united (along haraki/quietist lines), but they have different interpretations of Salafi theology and jurisprudence. The chapter examines how modernization has influenced and transformed Salafi tradition. It analyzes how Salafi ʿulama have responded to social changes taking place domestically, regionally, and globally. It also looks at whether the transnational networks of ʿulama are affected by the contestation and negotiation of aqidah and fiqh in relation to social matters in Muslim societies. It questions whether the haraki/quietist dichotomy is relevant to understanding the theological/jurisprudential positions of the Salafi ʿulama.","PeriodicalId":318944,"journal":{"name":"Rethinking Salafism","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124175077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It analyzes the transnational networks of Salafi ‘ulama in the selected countries, and their domestic considerations of those clerics when engaging with Salafi ideals. It also highlights the contributions made by the book in relation to the evolutionary nature of Islamist politics in the region and how Salafi ‘ulama respond to different political circumstances, regionally and locally. The conclusion further outlines the attitudes of Salafi ‘ulama towards the Shiʿa and how their networks are fostered and destabilized in the face of the Sunni-Shiʿa divide in the region. Similar destabilization occurs in relation to social issues.","PeriodicalId":318944,"journal":{"name":"Rethinking Salafism","volume":"37 16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116788760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chapter uncovers the various positions toward the Shiʿa advocated by the ʿulama who operate as transnational actors, fostering anti-Shiʿa narratives in the name of preserving Sunni solidarity. The chapter looks into the dynamics of the networks of the ʿulama on the Shiʿa question while examining how local, regional, and global circumstances influence the intensity and frequency of the anti-Shiʿa positions. It analyzes the cooperation between the ʿulama in the promotion of their interpretations of Shiʿa theology and activities. The chapter questions whether the haraki/quietist dichotomy is relevant to understanding the positions of the Salafi ʿulama on sectarian matters.","PeriodicalId":318944,"journal":{"name":"Rethinking Salafism","volume":"507 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134424847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It looks at the emergence of Salafi cross-border connections which began as apolitical, but gradually mutated, witnessing the development of the activist haraki trend. The chapter then examines how both haraki and quietist ʿulama forged regional alliances to preserve their interpretations of political Islam by endorsing other ʿulama of similar views. These interactions cross national boundaries, and take place within the framework of domestic, regional, and global political circumstances. The chapter analyzes whether these political circumstances foster or destabilize the networks of ʿulama as they attempt to construct and maintain Salafi political or apolitical identity.","PeriodicalId":318944,"journal":{"name":"Rethinking Salafism","volume":"91 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131220108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
