Here we demonstrate a contribution of plant underground storage on seed weight. We collected 348 seed samples of 230 species, in the forest-steppe, steppe, desert-steppe and desert zones in Mongolia, between 1981 and 2007. All species were categorized by growth form, flowering phenology and underground storage. Plant height was not different among categories of flowering phenology and underground storage. Seed weight was higher in large storage perennials than in small storage species. Correlation between seed weight and plant height was significantly positive in small storage perennials but it was insignificant in large storage perennials. For small storage perennials, correlation between seed weight and plant height was found in early and continuous flowering perennials while was absent in late flowering perennials. For large storage perennials, seed weight and plant height positively correlated in early flowering perennials, but those were not correlated and negatively correlated in continuous and late flowering perennials, respectively. The results suggest that early and continuous flowering perennials might use photosynthetic production for seed development, more intensive than late flowering perennials. Also, late flowering perennials more strongly use underground storage for seed development.","PeriodicalId":31321,"journal":{"name":"Mongolian Journal of Biological Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41670048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Признаки морфологии крыла широко используются в систематике и таксономии семейства Dolichopodidae, однако изменчивость формы крыла долихоподид изучена недостаточно. Подробное изучение межвидовой и межродовой изменчивости формы крыльев может помочь в таксономических исследованиях, а понимание направления отбора данных признаков важно для построения филогенетических схем и изучения эволюционных тенденций. Изменчивость формы крыла 72 видов из 5 родов подсемейства Dolichopodinae была проанализирована методами геометрической морфометрии с целью определить, возможно лииспользовать форму для таксономической идентификации морфологически сходных видов и родов. Канонический анализ переменных формы крыла выявил значимые различия как между родами, так и между видами. Анализ показал, что большая часть изменчивости формы крыла была связана со смещением заднейпоперечной жилки и апикальных частей жилок CuA1, R4+5 и M1+2, из которых последние две продемонстрировали тенденцию к сближению. Дискриминантный анализ показал, что форма крыла позволяет правильно определить род от 74,50% до 91,58% образцов. Успешное выделение образцов в их априорные виды было произведено в среднем в 84,04% случаев. Детальный анализ изменчивости формы крыла в подсемействе с учётом внешней группы позволил выявить тенденции эволюционных изменений, функциональное значение которых обсуждается. В дальнейшем будет создана база данных переменных формы крыльев, которая может быть использована для таксономической диагностики двукрылых семейства и изучения морфометри-ческих признаков на различных таксономических уровнях.","PeriodicalId":31321,"journal":{"name":"Mongolian Journal of Biological Sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42285980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The last recorded sightings of Przewalski's horses occurred in the Dzungarian Gobi desert in SW Mongolia, today's Great Gobi B Strictly Protected Area (SPA). A re-introduction program was initiated in 1992 and the first group of captive-born Przewalski's horses was airlifted to the SPA. Given the logistical challenges associated with such a venture, the initial project focus has been on transport logistics and the well-being of the re-introduced horses. Today, conservation efforts are spread over the entire protected area. Present day efforts include other mammals, vegetation and the local people. Part of the meat is believed to reach the meat markets in the capital Ulaanbaatar. To test this hypothesis, we collected 500 meat samples between February and May 2006. To differentiate between domestic horse (Equus caballus) and wild ass meat, we developed a restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assay based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We amplified and sequenced a cytochrome b fragment (335 bp) and carried out a multialignment of the generated sequences for the domestic horse, the Asiatic wild ass, the domestic donkey (Equus asinus) and the Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus przewalskii). We detected a species-specific restriction site (AatII) for the Asiatic wild ass, resulting in a specific restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) band pattern. This RFLP assay represents a rapid and cost-effective method to detect wild ass meat. All of the 500 meat samples we collected and analysed within this pilot project proved to be domestic horsemeat as declared by the sales people. Thus, either the assumption that wild ass meat is sold as \"cheap horse meat\" is wrong, or we picked the wrong markets, products or season.</p>","PeriodicalId":31321,"journal":{"name":"Mongolian Journal of Biological Sciences","volume":"4 2","pages":"57-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3207225/pdf/ukmss-36607.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40134026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
