In the midst of this unprecedented crisis, it is a duty for psychotherapists and other mental health professionals to carry on working with emotionally vulnerable people, maximising the use of digital technology. The article suggests that this traditional duty may fall short under exceptional circumstances and, so, it might become necessary to go beyond the comfort of the consulting room — in order to address problems effectively in the social, cultural, and political arenas. This article includes an ongoing piece of online clinical work with a patient recovering from psychosis, whilst further reflecting on the current health, economic, and social emergency.","PeriodicalId":309255,"journal":{"name":"Attachment in the Time of the Pandemic","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132444187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fundamental features of the parent relationship with the infant continue to be present in family relationships throughout the life span. These features provide psychological safety, intersubjective meanings regarding self and other, open and engaged emotional conversations, and the development of family stories that ultimately create coherent family narratives. This article utilises this knowledge of healthy family relationships and communication patterns in an attachment-based family therapy. A family case study is used to demonstrate how maladaptive relational patterns and stories based on shame and fear may be addressed and then, through engaging in therapeutic conversations, the family is able to develop stories of healing and transformation.","PeriodicalId":309255,"journal":{"name":"Attachment in the Time of the Pandemic","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130798514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People who are struggling to find ways to feel and function better in both their close relationships and in the larger world. The coronavirus pandemic has collided with some core concepts of relational psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, challenging accepted theoretical conventions, such as the analytic frame, and impacting the attachment systems of both therapists and clients, individually and together. In these vignettes, each client is at a different stage of therapy, and I have described how the pandemic restrictions have either disturbed, or enhanced, our connection. Their stories are moving, and finding the essence of each one of them, even in this brief vignette format, has been a labour of love. I have written about their predicaments, but also about their impact on me, not only as a psychotherapist, but also as a human being.","PeriodicalId":309255,"journal":{"name":"Attachment in the Time of the Pandemic","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126784730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What to make, he wonders, of his reliance upon his remotely conducted practice for his psychological well-being during this period of not-enough-me-time? A mode of countertransferential confession yields to consideration of a need for heightened self-vigilance. Also considered is the possibility that the analyst's dispositional shift may in fact prove to be facilitative to some treatments. The author seeks to bring as much good-humoured grace and humility to his inevitable discombobulation as he can. \"Rolling with it\" may be the best one can hope for whilst doing clinical work under such strained conditions.","PeriodicalId":309255,"journal":{"name":"Attachment in the Time of the Pandemic","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124394187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
