Data for early 2019 show growth in most of the manufacturing industries. Barring some industries (e.g., food and chemical industries and metallurgy), this was not exactly in line with previous trends, the dynamics of fundamental factors, the downturn in the wholesale and retail trade and stagnating freight turnover and construction sectors.","PeriodicalId":301975,"journal":{"name":"TransportRN: Freight Transportation & Value Chains (Topic)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128580332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using rich spatial data, I simulate trade flows over more than 70,000 links covering the entire continent. I maximise over the space of networks and find the optimal road system for every African state. My simulations predict that Africa would gain 1.1% of total welfare from better organising its national road systems. I then construct a novel dataset of local network inefficiency and I find that colonial infrastructure projects significantly skew trade networks towards a sub-optimal equilibrium. I also find evidence for regional favouritism and inefficient aid provision.","PeriodicalId":301975,"journal":{"name":"TransportRN: Freight Transportation & Value Chains (Topic)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126074321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2015, the figures fell significantly and amounted to 750 million tons and 404 billion US dollars. In 2016 cargo traffic in physical terms increased to 767 million tons, but decreased in value to 363 billion US dollars. The key drivers of the changes for the period from 2014 to 2016 were the following: the imposition of mutual sanctions between the Russian Federation and foreign states, the unstable political situation in Ukraine and the trade blockade on the part of Ukraine. As a result, there was a redistribution of cargo flows between the points of admission on the border of the Russian Federation. In addition, the redistribution of freight flows is influenced by barriers related to the customs administration system, which are faced by companies engaged in foreign economic activities. The purpose of this work is to build a methodology and conduct a quantitative assessment of the impact of customs reform in Russia on the loading of checkpoints, including analysis of the product and geographical aspects. The results of the assessment will allow to build priorities for the arrangement of existing checkpoints on the basis of gravitation to them from the side of freight carriers.","PeriodicalId":301975,"journal":{"name":"TransportRN: Freight Transportation & Value Chains (Topic)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134189696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model features complementary networks, scheduling, price elastic demands, and demand uncertainty. For the case of a given number of vehicles, the analysis shows that carrier collaboration increases vehicle sizes (thus, fleet capacity) if marginal seat costs are low while fleet capacity remains unchanged if marginal seat costs are high. If both vehicle sizes and vehicle numbers can be varied, then collaboration will always increase vehicle numbers and fleet capacity, while the effects on vehicle sizes and, thus, also load factors, are ambiguous and therewith hard to predict. Numerical simulations indicate that collaboration increases expected load factors also when the number of vehicles is endogenous.","PeriodicalId":301975,"journal":{"name":"TransportRN: Freight Transportation & Value Chains (Topic)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127957694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim is on the one hand to fill the gap of modeling the gas markets which to date have basically been ignored in the maritime literature. By innovating demand and productivity, as well as proposing supply with straightforward entry and exit on the other, we overcome the need of a flexible framework that in turn is applicable on modeling other shipping markets. Although this cumbersome exercise requires a considerable amount of information, the benefit of a model based on economic theory is that one can directly test the assumption of market equilibrium at the same time that it could effectively be used by the industry. By so doing, we confirm the positive albeit diffused relation between market utilization levels and freight rates, expounding that market information is instantaneously reflected in prices. A forecasting application of the model and a sensitivity example on some key variables conclude the analysis.","PeriodicalId":301975,"journal":{"name":"TransportRN: Freight Transportation & Value Chains (Topic)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115569390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patil, Balram Avittatur","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.2140679","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.2140679","url":null,"abstract":"To take advantage of economies of scale, vendors and transporters often use quantity discounts to influence the firms to order in larger quantities. Also, as the firms use delivery windows to procure and transport short life cycle products, it becomes important to simultaneously decide the best possible procurement and transportation plan over the product life cycle. Similarly, there is growing recognition amongst both practitioners and researchers to decide the end of the season markdowns by studying the sales pattern. In this paper, we propose a stochastic programming with recourse formulation to study this problem with the objective of maximizing the retailer's expected product life cycle profit keeping the initial business promised, subsequent lifecycle replenishment orders, transportation batch sizes and markdowns as recourse variables. We propose a solution procedure that efficiently solves this stochastic nonlinear problem. Our computational experiments suggest that it is always not necessary to select the most complex action plan. Under some business environments, the conventional strategy of placing and transporting a single large order is a better option. We then identity situations where decisions such as markdowns and use of quick response suppliers can be useful.","PeriodicalId":301975,"journal":{"name":"TransportRN: Freight Transportation & Value Chains (Topic)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129834346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
