The last 30 years have seen large changes in the organisation of work in workplaces all over the world. In the British workplace, change has been a direct product of new employer strategies to compete in an increasingly internationalised product market. The new wave of work organisation has included the development of both hard and soft techniques of HRM, has adapted to the Japanese production model, and has more latterly taken on the ‘high performance’ concept. The Government, in adapting to these developments, has also sought to encourage employers to work in partnership with their employees and trade unions in an effort to raise productivity in jointly agreed initiatives. This consensus-based approach is presented as an alternative to the confrontation between unions and employers in British industry. There is little disagreement amongst academics and practitioners that these changes have happened, although there remains considerable division as to the scale and scope of change, and probably more importantly, as to the effects the changes have had on the quality of working life and the intensity of work itself. All of this is important context for the HR professional.","PeriodicalId":300715,"journal":{"name":"A Philosopher Looks at Work","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114851877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Theoretisch, mittels kurzer historischer, politischer, okonomischer sowie anthropologischer Erlauterungen, wird das Konzept Arbeit in seinen Bedeutungen und Dimensionen hinterfragt und im Kontext der Forschung angedacht. Die Analyse der Arbeit in Starbucks beinhaltet ein deskriptives sowie ein relationales Modell, bestehend aus Beobachtungen, semi-strukturierten Interviews und theoretischen Uberlegungen. Das Ziel dieser Ethnographie ist Arbeit in dynamischen und relationalen Beziehungsverhaltnissen zu verstehen, als einen moglichen Forschungsansatz, um das Konzept, wie es gelebt wird, zu beschreiben.","PeriodicalId":300715,"journal":{"name":"A Philosopher Looks at Work","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123605907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
