Although it is important to verify such wireless network technologies, it is expensive or technologically difficult to repeatedly reproduce the wireless environments required for verification. Additionally, large-scale wireless network environments such as IoT environments are also required for verification of wireless technologies. However, conventional verification approaches cannot provide large-scale wireless network environments that, emulate radio propagation or verify actual wireless technologies and applications. We propose NETorium, which provides large-scale wireless network environments that are suitable for verification of wireless network technologies. NETorium comprises Meteor, a radio propagation emulator, and Asteroid, a virtual wireless network software for building virtual wireless network environments that employ hardware emulators in a wired network. Meteor can handle network protocols that, conventional radio propagation emulators cannot and is capable of emulating radio propagation in large-scale wireless network environments. Asteroid constructs virtual wireless networks that can transmit actual wireless frames. We demonstrate that NETorium can handle 1000-node wireless networks; conventional approaches can only handle a maximum of 100 nodes. Additionally, a performance evaluation of a simulated network with WPA2 authentication in the ad hoc mode demonstrates that NETorium can emulate large-scale wireless network environments with high-fidelity.","PeriodicalId":295518,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Asian Internet Engineering Conference","volume":"30 7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128181496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is not realistic to expect of all the end devices, including less capable and low-cost devices like sensors or embedded systems, to satisfy the requirement of integrated authentication procedure like 802.1x. We propose Software-defined Authentication FramEwork (SAFE) that enables 1) isolation of unauthenticated devices and 2) access control with more flexible modes of authentication. By systematically separating authentication and access control, the networks can have multiple options for authenticating end devices according to their capability, while access control and policy enforcement can be done on a unified platform using SDN. SAFE uses a combined approach of MAC-based identification and location awareness, i.e., the port number and a switch DPID in SDN, to keep unauthenticated devices isolated and still be able to communicate with their affordable authentication server. We examined SAFE in the following 3 scenarios: 1) an emulation environment, 2) a live test bed using production SDN switches and 3) a mixed network with both SDN and non-SDN switches. This paper also implements an alternative and practical mode of authentication expecting IoT devices, which would benefit the most from SAFE.","PeriodicalId":295518,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Asian Internet Engineering Conference","volume":"28 19","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114017593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is that a large number of them will be used in data-centric applications demanding data and device mobility---facilities that the original design of the Internet was not expected to provide as evidenced by its coupling of names and locations. To address the problem, we suggest the use of communication platforms aimed at data-centric applications with mobility support, such as Information Centric Networking platforms. To prove the soundness of our arguments we discuss a smart lighting controller that we have implemented on the Named Data Networking platform. We demonstrate how developers can take advantage of data-centric abstractions such as naming and group communication. We evaluate the controller to show that it is capable of meeting time constraints and superior to an equivalent cloud-based implementation.","PeriodicalId":295518,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Asian Internet Engineering Conference","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127887511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An example, the internet connection of Reunion Island is mainly based on links to France located about 10,000kms away. This situation generated a particular connection which induced high delays and degraded internet service. Typically, the minimal delay between France and Reunion Island is around 180ms. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the Internet connection by analyzing delay and path properties from and to Reunion Island mapped to continent IPv4 spread. With two experiments, based on 27 local probes and 7,860,000 traces, we propose a correlation analyzing between delay and path properties. One particular finding is that the delay is more dependent of the chosen path as the geographical distance, compared to models in literature.","PeriodicalId":295518,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Asian Internet Engineering Conference","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130729469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While there are millions of applications available in mobile application markets, users often have very little information to rely upon when selecting which applications to download and use in terms behavior and security. Many applications may have the functionality users desire but may also have undesirable behavior such as excessive network usage, use of ads, linkage to malicious sites, or unauthorized leakage of user or application usage information. In this paper, we design a system to provide users with additional information on the application's behavior by actively eliciting and identifying undesirable behavior exhibited by mobile applications. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of our system, we use it to study the network behavior of top mobile applications listed in the Android and iOS application markets. We find that applications can be clustered into groups that have distinct behavior patterns. Using our system, users can determine an application's behavior group prior to installation on their mobile devices, reducing the exposure to any undesirable application behavior.","PeriodicalId":295518,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Asian Internet Engineering Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130399023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have built the first two OS kernel implementations of ILNPv6 (ILNP as a superset of IPv6), in both the Linux OS kernel and the FreeBSD OS kernel. Our evaluation is in comparison with IPv6, in the context of a topical and challenging scenario: host mobility implemented as a purely end-to-end function. Our experiments show that ILNPv6 has excellent potential for deployment using existing IPv6 infrastructure, whilst offering the new properties and functionality of ILNP.","PeriodicalId":295518,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Asian Internet Engineering Conference","volume":"381 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133611399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper focuses on SAGE2 as a typical data intensive collaboration system, which shares information on large high-resolution displays with other sites using web browser technologies. However, it takes long time to share large files between SAGE2 systems. In order to improve the file sharing performance of SAGE2, this paper proposes a file sharing mechanism using Content Espresso, a distributed storage system for global large file sharing, which can be applied to other web-based collaboration systems. We implemented and evaluated the proposed mechanism by emulating a global network environment. The result of the evaluation confirms that the proposed mechanism has better performance than the existing file sharing mechanism on SAGE2 when RTT between SAGE2 systems is longer than 10 ms.","PeriodicalId":295518,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Asian Internet Engineering Conference","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123631963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, some paths experience international detours, i.e., originate in one country, cross international boundaries and return to the same country. In most cases these are sensible traffic engineering or peering decisions at ISPs that serve multiple countries. In some cases such detours may be suspicious. Characterizing international detours is useful to a number of players: (a) network engineers trying to diagnose persistent problems, (b) policy makers aiming at adhering to certain national communication policies, (c) entrepreneurs looking for opportunities to deploy new networks, or (d) privacy-conscious states trying to minimize the amount of internal communication traversing different jurisdictions. In this paper we characterize international detours in the Internet during the month of January 2016. To detect detours we sample BGP RIBs every 8 hours from 461 RouteViews and RIPE RIS peers spanning 30 countries. We use geolocation of ASes which geolocates each BGP prefix announced by each AS, mapping its presence at IXPs and geolocation infrastructure IPs. Finally, we analyze each global BGP RIB entry looking for detours. Our analysis shows more than 5K unique BGP prefixes experienced a detour. 132 prefixes experienced more than 50% of the detours. We observe about 544K detours. Detours either last for a few days or persist the entire month. Out of all the detours, more than 90% were transient detours that lasted for 72 hours or less. We also show different countries experience different characteristics of detours.","PeriodicalId":295518,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 12th Asian Internet Engineering Conference","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133733830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
