Opportunities to attract human resources to this domain need to be identified. Due to the exponential development of the domain, several roles associated with software development emerged, including the role of Scrum Master. We had a series of interviews with persons in leading positions and a focus group with Scrum Masters to establish what are the desired skills for this role, both technical and soft, and the main challenges associated with this role. According to the focus group discussion, the Scrum Master role can be performed as a “single role” or can overlap with managerial or technical roles, depending on the project. We investigated the gender diversity associated with the Scrum Master role and concluded that women have good soft skills (communication, conflict management, empathy) that make them a good fit for this role.","PeriodicalId":293720,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE/ACM 4th Workshop on Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Software Engineering (GEICSE)","volume":"31 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123541466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is known that women are heavily underrepresented in CS, but substantial parts of the DEI issues are still unexplored. Intersectionality provides a more nuanced perspective of equality as it acknowledges exclusion and discrimination coming from overlapping layers of people’s identities, e.g. gender, ethnicity, dis/ability, nationality, socioeconomic status, age, religion, and sexuality, in combination. It is important to address systemic barriers, bias, and stereotypes in CS through the lenses of intersectionality. There is a growing literature on challenges of women and binary gender diversity in CS, but a limitation to many of these investigations is that they look at only one dimension of discrimination rather than the complexity of intersectional challenges. That is why the research objective of this study is to provide information on the relation of intersectionality and CS, using the Systematic Literature Review methodology. The results show that there is still scarce research explicitly connected to the concept of intersectionality in CS, but awareness is increasing. The SLR also reveals various challenges and success factors related to intersectionality, which call for further attention.","PeriodicalId":293720,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE/ACM 4th Workshop on Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Software Engineering (GEICSE)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127967103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this imbalance, numerous STEM intervention programmes have been implemented worldwide. These programmes are aimed at helping girls and women to reach their full potential in terms of school and work.Planning and implementing a STEM intervention programme is a complex process. There are many different stakeholders, and their needs can be varied and evolving. This paper discusses STEM interventions, and it presents our experience with a specific intervention, the University of Limerick-Lero/Johnson & Johnson WiSTEM2D (Women in STEM, Manufacturing and Design) programme. This programme has evolved based on the learnings identified in areas such as participant group dynamics, invited speaker engagement and presentation delivery, and teamwork-centered activities. Such learnings can be applied across a range of STEM fields, including software engineering. We believe that initiatives, such as WiSTEM2D, which support and promote gender equality in STEM2D fields, and specifically Computer Science (CS) education and industry, are of key importance. Our review of the programme has identified three primary lessons: (1) individuals did not benefit as strongly as those working in groups (2) online events allow for more speakers and greater transfer of knowledge and (3) working in teams provides the students with the opportunity to socialise with other women in a work environment.","PeriodicalId":293720,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE/ACM 4th Workshop on Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Software Engineering (GEICSE)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122813765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With more girls entering the field of software engineering and companies taking more diversity and inclusion actions, there is potential for universities to also level up their diversity and inclusion approaches in teaching. This study aims to investigate the status of diversity and inclusion approaches used in software engineering education at the university level in Finland. An online survey (N=30) was conducted among Finnish software engineering university teachers to identify commonly used approaches and case examples of diversity and inclusion, as well as challenges faced in integrating these topics into courses. The key findings indicate that while there is recognition of the importance of diversity and inclusion in software engineering education and among faculties in Finland, there is still room for improvement in the approaches used and in increasing awareness among teachers. By shedding light on these issues, this study contributes to efforts to enhance diversity and inclusion in software engineering education both in Finland and internationally.","PeriodicalId":293720,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE/ACM 4th Workshop on Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Software Engineering (GEICSE)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126411645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The program has been successful in engaging a diverse group of high school students, encouraging them to explore computer science (CS) through problem-solving in the areas of their choice. The program’s structure and approach have been instrumental in promoting interest in CS and increasing the understanding of the importance of using CS to solve real-world, interdisciplinary problems. The results of surveys conducted with program participants have shown that the program has been successful in providing girls with an alternative pathway into the field of computer science by building on their individual interests, which would not have been possible without the interdisciplinary approach.","PeriodicalId":293720,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE/ACM 4th Workshop on Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Software Engineering (GEICSE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115281587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reasons for this include low self-esteem in STEM fields, toxic environments, bad sleeping habits during the event, and a competitive atmosphere. Hackathons also can be a valuable opportunity for undergraduate students to improve their skills, but a lack of gender diversity can prevent women from taking advantage of these opportunities. Recently, initiatives have been implemented to increase the number of women participating in hackathons, such as women-only events, balancing participants by gender during the selection process, and using feminist and social themes for the hackathon. Our qualitative study investigated how event design choices (Focus on Women; Event support activities such as mentoring and pre-pitch; and Event warm-up activities) can influence the participant’s experience in a women-focused hackathon. Data was collected through surveys and semi-structured interviews with participants.","PeriodicalId":293720,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE/ACM 4th Workshop on Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Software Engineering (GEICSE)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128440838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We collected survey responses from contributors to FLOSS development on GitHub to characterize perceptions of social diversity and corporate involvement in projects. We additionally analyzed data extracted from FLOSS projects hosted on GitHub to investigate differences in diversity based on corporate engagement levels. Our results suggest that organizational decisions may be detrimental to both the expansion of a project’s contributor base and for increasing diversity across FLOSS ecosystems. However, as some survey participants note in their responses, organizations subsidizing FLOSS development have opportunities to increase access to and openness of projects which would be beneficial for diversity. This research thus serves to identify organizational factors and actions which harm and help initiatives to improve inclusivity and equity in FLOSS development.","PeriodicalId":293720,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE/ACM 4th Workshop on Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Software Engineering (GEICSE)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133158169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several studies have looked into the barriers that women face when entering the industry. However, none of the studies investigated women’s undergrad experiences from the perspective of cognitive distance, which is the distance faced by peers from different backgrounds. This study addresses this gap through an interview and survey-based approach in the context of Bangladesh. It demonstrates the impact of cognitive distance on female participation in software engineering. It also demonstrates how the intensity of this distance varies throughout the undergraduate years. It also identifies the barriers to cognitive distance mitigation. This study confirms that a good internship experience can help to reduce the cognitive distance felt and increase inclusion. Finally, this study proposes six strategies for creating a more inclusive environment for women in software engineering, such as increasing awareness, fostering cooperation, the intervention of the authority, and implementing other intervention programs such as internships.","PeriodicalId":293720,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE/ACM 4th Workshop on Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Software Engineering (GEICSE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128986909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
