This study has therefore been done to estimate the markers of iron in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus as compared to impaired glycemic status and apparently healthy individuals and to look for correlation between these various iron markers and glycemic control. Methods: One hundred and fifteen (115) subjects were enrolled for the study and divided into three groups: fifty (50) each of diabetic & impaired glycemic status and fifteen (15) apparently healthy individuals based on HbA1c level. Basic demographic profile like age and sex and estimation of serum random glucose, urea, ceatinine, iron, ferritin, transferrin and soluble transferring receptor (stfR) were done. Results: ANOVA test has shown a significant difference in the mean for stfR (F=11.055, p=0.000) as well as for stfR/ferritin index (F=8.68, p=0.000). ANOVA for serum iron, transferrin, and ferritin were not statistically different for the groups. A significant correlation was found between HbA1c & stfR -ferritin index and between HbA1c and stfR in diabetic group. Conclusion: Iron and its markers are not only important in detecting and study of iron deficiency anemia but also might have a strong role in glucose homeostasis as well as development of intolerance and hence diabetes. stfR and stfR- ferritin index is comparatively stable and might be therefore used as additional marker along with HbA1C for monitoring blood glucose homeostasis.","PeriodicalId":290451,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of medical research","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139310086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the event of an obstruction, and depending on the etiology of the obstruction, endoscopic drainage of the urinary tract is indicated. This study aimed to identify the indications and assess the quality of life of patients who have undergone endoscopic drainage of the upper urinary tract at the Clinique Universitaire d'Urologie - Andrologie of the CNHU-HKM in Cotonou over the past five years. Patients and method: This was a descriptive, retrospective study of patients who underwent endoscopic drainage of the upper urinary tract (JJ stent assembly) at the CNHU-HKM University Urology-Andrology Clinic from January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022. The English-language \"ureteral stent symptom questionnaire (USSQ)\" developed and validated by Joshi et al, then translated and validated in French in 2010, enabled us to assess the tolerance of JJ stents in our patients. Results: A total of 173 patients were selected, with an average age of 46. Males accounted for 64.61 % of cases. JJ catheterization was indicated in 51.44 % of cases (n=89), due to ureterohydronephrosis. Etiologies were dominated by lithiasis obstacles in 73.41 % of cases. Pain and discomfort associated with the presence of the JJ stent were found in 27.75 % of cases (n=48). Sexual activity was impeded by pain in 4 patients (8.0 %). Conclusion: The use of JJ stent is common practice in urology, but they are responsible for significant morbidity. In our study, the indication is dominated by renal colic complicating lithiasis. Studies aimed at assessing the quality of life of JJ stent patients remain a challenge, as they very often lead to subjective conclusions and are generally influenced by confounding variables such as age and comorbidities. A better understanding of the areas of daily life impacted by JJ stent use will enable us to better inform our patients, as well as develop new JJ stent models to improve their tolerability.","PeriodicalId":290451,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of medical research","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139309953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In urban areas, traffic is one of the most significant sources of hazardous exhaust pollutants. Street vendors are often exposed to air pollutants as a result of their proximity to busy roads and intersections where vehicle emissions are high. Street vendors form an integral part of urban life globally as they provide convenience, affordable goods, and services to the general public. Aim: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with respiratory and other health symptoms among street vendors in Gaborone, Botswana. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire distributed to randomly selected street vendors. The questionnaire gathered information on demographic characteristics and respiratory and other health symptoms among street vendors. Data was analysed using logistic regression. Results: About 392 street vendors participated in the study, with 71% females. The mean age (M±SD) of the respondents was 46±13 years, with an age range of 25–66 years. About 46%) and 38% attained senior and junior secondary school certificates, respectively and 78%) worked for >8 hours/day. Coughing, headache and dizziness were reported by 89%, 62% and 58% of respondents respectively. Female vendors were at increased risk of wheezes (Odds Ratio (OR): 3.12, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI):1.24-7.85) and headaches (OR: 4.61, 95% CI: 2.02-10.54) when compared to males. Increasing age and working for >5 days/week were significantly associated with respiratory and other health symptoms such as sore throat, nasal congestion and wheezes. Tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption predisposed street vendors to nasal congestion (OR: 4.34, 95% CI: 1.28-14.72) and shortness of breath (OR: 3.70, 95% CI: 1.29-10.65), respectively. Physical exercise provided a protective effect against chest tightness (OR: 0.133, 95% CI: 0.03-0.06) and dizziness (OR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.15-0.35). Conclusion: Street vendors reported a high prevalence of respiratory and related health symptoms. Factors such as increasing age, tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption have been associated with respiratory and related health symptoms among street vendors. Large scale research that quantifies TRAP pollutants and health symptoms is needed to inform policy development.","PeriodicalId":290451,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of medical research","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139310308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of our study was to describe the etiopathogenic and therapeutic aspects of scrotal calcinosis. Case Report: This was a 38-year-old patient who consulted us for painless nodules of the scrotum that had been evolving for 15 years and who was seeking treatment for aesthetic reasons. Clinical and paraclinical examination led to the diagnosis of scrotal calcinosis. A scrotal excision, including all lesions, and a scrotal plasty were performed. The diagnosis of scrotal calcinosis was confirmed by histopathological examination of the surgical specimen. Postoperative follow-up was straightforward after 18 months. Conclusion: Scrotal calcinosis is a rare and benign condition. The etiology remains unclear, and treatment is limited to surgical excision of the nodules, which also restores the aesthetics of the bursa. However, the risk of recurrence is not zero.","PeriodicalId":290451,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of medical research","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139311419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: Selected medicinal plants namely Clerodendrum myricoides, (Hoecst) Vatke Carissa eduli (Forsk) vahl, Acassia tortilis (Fossk) Hayne Myrsine africana L., Rhamnus staddo A. Rich, Rhamnus prinoides L, herit, Psiadia arabica Jabb and Spach and Sansevierria enhribergii Bach were subjected to the Brineshrimp Lethality Test. Three dilutions of the aqueous, methanol/water (70/30) v/v and chloroform extracts were used five (5) tubes per dilution. Ten naupli were introduced per tube and mortality evaluated after 24hrs. Mortality data was analysed using the probit method of Finney Computor Programme. The programme uses the number of dose level, the number of brine shrimp for every concentration, percent mortality for every concentration and dose level to calculate lethal concentration (LC50) and its 95 % confidence interval. Results: All the aqueous extracts had an LC50 equal to or higher than 1000g/ml which is considered non cytotoxic. The extracts showing a low LC50 (< 1000) are likely candidates for cytotoxic or anticancer drugs and can be investigated further. The extracts showing a high LC50 (> 1000) can be used as non cytotoxic drugs and hence further investigations would be necessary. Conclusion: The bioactivity results in this study validates the use of the plants as herbal remedies by Samburu Traditional healers.","PeriodicalId":290451,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of medical research","volume":"4 5","pages":"249-255"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://doi.org/10.31254/jmr.2018.4511","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147893901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
