In this movie, Victorian women are bound by a law that forbids them from having the right to vote. This article aims to identify and describe women’s rebellion in their struggle for voices in the Victorian era.  Employing Bartlett's rebellious feminism within a feminist perspective of John Stuart Mill, the article analyses how Eudoria Holmes, a female character, undergoes dangerous ways in attempt to fight for women's rights to vote.  Using the script and cinematographical elements, the film analysis reveals that Eudoria Holmes rebels against the values of Victorian society on three levels: individual, familial, and societal. Becoming an independent and courageous mother, she plants the seeds of rebellion to her daughter, Enola Holmes. Moreover, Eudoria also establishes a secretive women’s circle to build solidarity with the purposes of social and political activism in the form of women's suffrage campaigns.","PeriodicalId":280493,"journal":{"name":"Anaphora: Journal of Language, Literary, and Cultural Studies","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127563507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kupers. Beginning from a position that sees masculinity as a socially constructed idea in a patriarchal culture, this article works through the concept that hegemonic masculinity under patriarchy can turn toxic. There is a connection between toxic masculinity and hegemonic masculinity because toxic masculinity deviates from hegemonic masculinity aspects that are destructive. Many toxic masculinity traits can be found in society. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research design since this study will be limited to explain on two traits that are found in the novel. The most prominent traits that can be found in the novel are the subordination of women and violence. The idea of subordination of women can harm women because it puts them in an inferior position. This idea is also harmful to men as well when they could not meet society’s expectation of being “real” men. Toxic masculinity also has the belief that to prove their manhood, men have to be able to act violently. From that idea, some characters in the novel perform violence because they want to fit society’s expectation of being a “real” man. This study concludes that the hegemony of masculinity under a patriarchal society can result in a bad situation where men are viewed as superior and women as inferior. It can push the idea of toxic masculinity, which is harmful to both men and women. It is because men's superior position in this situation can be destructive and harmful for both men and women.","PeriodicalId":280493,"journal":{"name":"Anaphora: Journal of Language, Literary, and Cultural Studies","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131702816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This topic has its critical academic discussion, especially how this behavior is related to gender, identity, gender role, and even considered destructive religious. This research aims to explore how homosexuality is depicted through homosexual gestures pictured in Call Me by Your Name, a film directed by Luca Guadagnino and released in 2017 at the Sundance film festival, United Kingdom, and the United States. This film successfully received the Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2018 Oscar. The method used is qualitative and engages with queer, Judith Butler on Gender performativity. The technique is a narrow textual analysis in which we are focused on the insight of the film's narrative text and images. We explore the homosexual gesture in Call Me by Your Name as presented by the film’s main characters, Ellio and Oliver by focusing on three performativities, namely, performance, homosexual identity, and sexual activity. The results show that in the form of homosexual gestures obtained: First, the performativity of the performance describes the general character and clothing worn by Elio and Oliver as a same-sex couple. Second, the performativity of homosexual identity shows that the actors are homosexual men. Third, the performativity of sexual activities such as kissing, and sexual deviations that are carried out in inappropriate places. In addition, the sexual relations between characters show the homoeroticism of sexual role stability, where there is a character who identifies with the sexual experience of the partner.","PeriodicalId":280493,"journal":{"name":"Anaphora: Journal of Language, Literary, and Cultural Studies","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115106700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research aims to reveal the multiculturalism elements in Clara NG's dwilogi of “Angin Dari Tebing”. This research is based on the value theory of multiculturalism which Thobroni and Nurgiyantoro coined. The values of multiculturalism in the text are analyzed using Barthes' semiotic theory of connotation and denotation. The results of this study state that there are five values of multiculturalism contained in this dwillogi of children's stories: solidarity and brotherhood, gender equality, family values, a sense of contentment in life, and sharing and control of power. Of the five values, the values of solidarity and brotherhood are described more by Clara. Each character with a different background has a high sense of tolerance and empathy so that no ethnocentrism can damage or negatively influence child readers. This study concludes that this book can be used as good reading material for children with good multiculturalism values. This book can teach about the importance of tolerance and mutual respect despite being in an environment with differences in race, ethnicity, religion, and language, as in Indonesia.","PeriodicalId":280493,"journal":{"name":"Anaphora: Journal of Language, Literary, and Cultural Studies","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133842549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is different from theatrical works or Broadway that are specifically aimed at connoisseurs. The ample evidence of popular films infers that American cultural field constructs its logicality in effect of this system. It affects at how one distinctively perceives theatre or Broadway as “art” and films as “entertainment\", leading the actors within them to seek to be legitimized as an “actor/artist” in a distinctive way. This article specifically aims to diagnose this condition through Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s film entitled Birdman (2014) that tells a story of a washed-up American film actor who wishes to revive his career on Broadway. The research utilizes Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on the mechanism of symbolic power, capital, and trajectories to reveal the dynamics of the field in legitimizing one’s status as an actor and the paths one takes to be legitimized as an artist. The findings suggest the asymmetrical position between Broadway and films leads to exertions of symbolic violence as portrayed by Birdman. The skillset to act is not a measurement for one to be called as an “actor”, rather it is the complex nexus between the field and the agent’s background that determines the legitimacy.","PeriodicalId":280493,"journal":{"name":"Anaphora: Journal of Language, Literary, and Cultural Studies","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122370805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
