Adequate selection of the UWB signal applied to the directly modulated laser (DML) and fixed in-line optical dispersion compensation are shown as effective solutions to reach 130 km of standard single-mode fibre. In addition, error vector magnitude (EVM) levels compliant with the UWB standard are achieved for LR-PONs with reaches between 75 km and 130 km. It is also shown that, for optical channel spacing as narrow as 0.2 nm, the proposed system suffers from negligible linear inter-channel crosstalk as the EVM of the UWB bands transmitted in the central channel of a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signal consisting in three optical channels, is similar to the EVM of the UWB bands transmitted in that channel when single-channel operation is considered. These results demonstrate that the proposed directly modulated LR-PON is an adequate solution to deliver the UWB signals to users' premises located in sparse take-up geographies.","PeriodicalId":276611,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Optical Communication Systems (OPTICS)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133091428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The core-clad materials have large refractive index difference of 0.49. The gain bandwidth calculated are 108 and 104 nm for the step index and hybrid micorstructured optical fibers with two zero dispersion wavelengths respectively. The broadest bandwidth in our calculation is 108 nm for step index fiber at pump wavelength 1238 nm.","PeriodicalId":276611,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Optical Communication Systems (OPTICS)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128321807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Theoretically, the performance of the optical MIMO multimode channel is well predictable. However, the realization of the optical MIMO channel requires substantial further research. In this work the efficiency of optical couplers in MIMO systems is studied in a 1,4 km multimode testbed. Optical couplers have long been used as passive optical components able to combine or split SISO (single-input single-output) data transmission from optical fibers. Our results show by the obtained measured impulse responses together with the simulated BER performance that optical couplers are well suited for the optical MIMO transmission despite their insertion losses and asymmetries. Comparing the different couplers those which maintain the different optical mode groups support the MIMO transmission more efficiently.","PeriodicalId":276611,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Optical Communication Systems (OPTICS)","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128281353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
