Chapter Four suggests at least three areas where policy change should occur. One is to increase the number of opportunities for personal development that lifers can undertake in prison, the better to foster their human flourishing and their efforts to assist others. A second is to make their lives more comfortable, particularly as they develop physical and cognitive maladies. A third – and most significant – is to change sentencing policy to enable easy keepers to be released. Their maturation and altruistic orientation leave them posing no public safety risk. A moral and fiscally-responsible punishment policy would make it harder to keep these prisoners so easily.","PeriodicalId":273808,"journal":{"name":"Too Easy to Keep","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114471502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This Introduction explores the concept of the “easy keeper” and explains its centrality to the book. The Introduction also outlines the book’s main arguments. It reviews the data that are central to the analysis and the main philosophical commitments upon which the arguments rest. It also reviews the rise in life sentences in the United States, and explains why the plight of the growing number of life-sentenced prisoners deserves greater consideration in punishment policy.","PeriodicalId":273808,"journal":{"name":"Too Easy to Keep","volume":"4 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115961463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As that population grows older, their mobility and their general health will decrease. These realities generate a growing number of challenges for prison staff. This chapter reviews the most significant of those challenges. Most notably, elderly prisoners will lose mobility, develop more chronic and complicated health issues, and witness declining cognitive ability. Few prisons are designed to address these issues, just as few can provide prisoners with a comfortable and dignified death. Absent a change in sentencing policy, America’s prisons will face only increasing difficulty in meeting the needs of elderly lifers","PeriodicalId":273808,"journal":{"name":"Too Easy to Keep","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132740537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They do so despite a prison environment that poses considerable challenges for efforts at personal growth. This chapter reviews some of those challenges. More specifically, it emphasizes: the often fraught relations that lifers possess with prison staff, with members of their family, and with each other; the dearth of opportunities for work and education; and the difficulty they face in atoning directly for their crimes. These impediments to individual betterment make all the more remarkable the ability of lifers to become such stable and productive community members.","PeriodicalId":273808,"journal":{"name":"Too Easy to Keep","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129899240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
