The research utilized both descriptive and inferential survey methods, with a total of 160 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Standard Questionnaires were used to collect data, which were then analyzed using frequency count, percentage, and t-test analysis for inferential statistics. The study revealed that the causes of HIV/AIDS included unprotected sex, prostitution, and pre-marital sexual activities, while symptoms included coughing, sneezing, swollen lymph nodes, and rash, among others. Although there is no permanent cure, individuals with HIV/AIDS can maintain their health by adopting a positive attitude and managing the disease effectively. Additionally, they can learn how to remain negative if they test negative. Drawing from the study’s findings, the following recommendations are made: students who find it difficult to control their sexual urges should use condoms to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS. It is essential for their attitudes toward HIV/AIDS to change positively. Moreover, they should be cautious about blood transfusions and avoid using unsterilized sharp objects like needles that have been previously used by others. The government should intensify the dissemination of information about HIV/AIDS through educational programs. Raising awareness and educating the public on prevention and management can contribute to reducing the spread of the virus. Nigerian students should be encouraged to undergo regular HIV/AIDS blood tests to know their status. Overcoming the fear of stigmatization and discrimination associated with testing is crucial for early detection and better management.","PeriodicalId":272288,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tertiary Education and Learning","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124530115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to determine the proficiency of the grade 10 students at Aloran Trade High School and the difficulty of reading comprehension. The instruments used in this study were adapted reading materials from PISA assessments with questions needing subjective answers, categorized according to the different comprehensions proposed in Barrett’s Taxonomy. The researchers collected data from 40 grade 10 students who were selected randomly using a random sampling technique. Item analysis (item difficulty and item discrimination) and descriptive analysis (mean and standard deviation) were used to analyze the data. After tabulating the data gathered, the researchers determined that the students have low proficiency in reading comprehension. Furthermore, no comprehension has an easy difficulty with the proficiency of grade 10 students. Literal and reorganizational comprehension have moderate difficulty, while inferential and evaluative comprehensions are difficult among the students. These imply that students need to be proficient in understanding a text’s explicit and implicit information. It is therefore recommended that interventions be made to address this issue.","PeriodicalId":272288,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tertiary Education and Learning","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133251677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Investigation on the Effect of Methods Used in Teaching in Primary School on Student’s Academic Performance in All Saints Primary School 1, Owode-Egba, LGA Ogun State, Nigeria","authors":"Segun Adegboyega Adekunle, Joshua Kunle Kadri","doi":"10.54536/jtel.v1i2.1956","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.54536/jtel.v1i2.1956","url":null,"abstract":"This research aimed to investigate the effect of methods used in teaching in primary schools on students’ academic performance at All Saints’ Anglican Primary School 1, Owode-Egba, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State. The study utilized a descriptive survey research method, selecting 7 teachers from the study area through simple random sampling. Two research questions were raised, and data were collected for the study using a hypothesis. The analysis involved frequency count, percentage, and Pearson correlation for inferential statistics. Findings revealed that teachers at All Saint’s Anglican Primary School 1 heavily utilize student-centered and student-teacher interactive methods. However, the analysis showed that the extent of using different teaching methods did not correlate with students’ performance in the class. Conclusions drawn from the study suggest that teachers generally use these methods with a high extent, and students perform satisfactorily in their subjects. Nevertheless, there was no significant relationship between the teachers’ extensive use of these methods and students’ satisfactory performance in science. Based on the identified limitations and findings, the following recommendations are made: Encourage a student-centered learning environment in secondary schools as it promotes higher-level learning outcomes more effectively than traditional teacher-centered approaches. Eliminate biases in teaching method selection based on exclusive knowledge to improve students’ academic performance. Create a conducive learning atmosphere to enhance students’ learning experiences. Additionally, teachers should increase their knowledge of various instructional strategies to keep students engaged and motivated during the teaching-learning process.","PeriodicalId":272288,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tertiary Education and Learning","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123138853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The topic chosen for the module development is one of the students’ identified least learned competencies, particularly in parallelograms and their properties. The study participants were five (5) module development experts and 110 students grouped into control and experimental groups. The control group was exposed to DepEd SLM, while the experimental group was exposed to GRRIM LM. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, mean, independent samples t-test, and ANCOVA. The results of the thematic analysis of the focus group discussion revealed a module’s characteristics that embody the GRRIM approach’s different stages. Furthermore, findings indicated that after the intervention, the experimental group’s post-test mean scores were found to be at a moderate level. In contrast, the control group remained at a low level. Finally, the study revealed that when pre-test mean scores were treated as a covariate, there was a significant difference in the post-test mean scores between the control and experimental groups. The findings revealed that the students exposed to GRRIM LM performed better than those exposed to DepEd SLM.","PeriodicalId":272288,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Tertiary Education and Learning","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124290775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
