Film directors manage multi-million projects and are hired on a project by project basis. \u0000We gather data on directors’ film projects from the time they enter the profession. We also study their background prior to the first movie they direct. As shown here and in previous work, the economic success of previous film projects is the main determinant of hiring for a new film, thus our null hypothesis is that controlling for career paths, age gender and race should not matter in landing a new project. \u0000However, we find that age matters and although directors start directing on average around age 40, there is evidence of age discrimination even for directors under 50. We also find more subtle evidence for gender bias, particularly in allocating budgets for future projects. \u0000We also document that on average, only 12% of an entering cohort of new directors are women and they follow a different path than men in the entertainment industry. \u0000It is significant that if there is evidence of discrimination in such an industry where career paths are public knowledge.

One of the main critiques is that we have little understanding of the internal dynamics of entrepreneurial ecosystems. One result of this is that there is little agreement if entrepreneurial ecosystems represent a cohesive community including all high-growth entrepreneurs in a region or if they are nested sub-communities. This speaks to larger disagreements about what entrepreneurial ecosystems are and how they work. This paper addresses this research gap by using a novel methodology to classify the backgrounds of FinTech founders and top managers in the largest British FinTech ecosystems. The paper finds that the ecosystems in the largest ecosysems of the City of London and East London are very cohesive while the smaller ecosystems in Edinburgh and Leeds are more nested, with fewer connections between local finance and technology communities. The paper argues that ecosystem cohesiveness increases as the ecosystem develops.

Researchers have extensively studied Latino-owned businesses throughout the country, paying particular attention to well-established Latino subgroups where they are most highly concentrated, such as Cuban economic enclaves in Miami and Mexican businesses in Los Angeles. However, little research has been devoted to Latino-owned enterprises in Washington, DC, which has emerged as an important new immigrant gateway city, making Latinos the metropolitan area's largest and fastest growing immigrant group, and the fastest growing of all racial and ethnic groups. The predominance of Latinos of Central and South American origin makes this DC a unique case deserving of particular attention. This study begins to fill this knowledge gap about Latino businesses in the DC region, and has a central objective of generating knowledge that will be useful to policy makers and service providers as they develop initiatives to address the needs of Latino entrepreneurs throughout the metropolitan area.

This study investigates the transition from part- to full-time entrepreneurship. We analyze how financial and non-financial motives of part-time entrepreneurs influence the intention to become full-time entrepreneurs. Our results show that part-time entrepreneurs starting their venture to supplement their wage income have lower transition intentions, whereas part-time entrepreneurs starting their venture to achieve independence or self-realization show higher transition intentions. Following a role model, social recognition, financial success, and innovation as motives do not influence the intention to become full-time entrepreneurs. The implications of these results with regard to part-time entrepreneurship are discussed.

This paper proposes a simple theory of skill-biased change in entrepreneurial technology that fits with cross-country, historical and micro evidence. For this, it introduces two additional features into an otherwise standard occupational choice, heterogeneous firm model a la Lucas (1978): technological change does not benefit all potential entrepreneurs equally, and there is a positive relationship between an individual's potential payoffs in working and in entrepreneurship. If some firms consistently benefit more from technological progress than others, they stay closer to the frontier, and the others fall behind. Because wages rise for all workers, low-productivity entrepreneurs will then at some point exit and become workers. As a consequence, the entrepreneurship rate falls with income per capita, average firm size and firm size dispersion increase with income per capita, and "entrepreneurship out of necessity" falls with income per capita. The paper also documents, for two of the facts for the first time, that these are exactly the relationships prevailing in cross-country data. Quantitatively, the model fits the U.S. experience well. Using the parameters from a calibration to the U.S., the model also explains cross-country patterns quite well.
