Several issues that have characterised his thinking and work are considered here, such as the family, the job urgency, the value of Christian education, immigration and the importance of human life, particularly his position against abortion and on the ‘end-of-life’ laws. The concept of modernity is key to understand the internal but also the external debates on child sexual abuses within the Church. While the roots of the problem are old, the issue represents a new social challenge that generates a firestorm both inside and outside the ecclesiastical world. The purpose of this article is to analyze and comprehend the rhetoric and approach adopted by John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis toward clergy abuse around the world. Therefore, this article explores some of the official speeches delivered by them on various occasions, paying attention to the context and the terminology used to talk about abuses. In particular, we examine the communication strategy of a Catholic nun, two Protestant leaders (one Methodist and one Lutheran) and a charismatic Christian within a megachurch. We explore three main aspects of the question: first, the ‘knots’ of their communication strategy (the number of products/services they offered as newsletters, books, podcasts, blogs…); second, the result of these strategies in terms of volume of their audience; and third, the topics they talk about and the use of SEO and ‘copywriting strategies’ to be more engaging. After a historiographical overview of the documents produced by the leaders of the Catholic Church from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, the article describes the institutions set up for this purpose in Italy and France, with particular reference to the dioceses of Milan and Paris. For the most part they can be classed as realist social novels with a didactic purpose. Le Fils de l’Esprit (1905) falls among these. While didactic novels are not generally remembered for their literary merit, the very qualities that consign them to marginal interest attract the interest of the historian. In the details of life and human interaction that novels portray may be communicated the texture of the times and feeling of a period that more analytic treatments convey. It was in the context of the Roman Question that the Holy See had to deal with the introduction of the new Italian Penal Code (commonly called ‘Zanardelli Code’), which was approved in June 1889 and came into force at the beginning of the following year.
