{"title":"Return to Sodom and Gomorrah: The ‘New’ Political-Economic System","authors":"Hershey H. Friedman","doi":"10.2139/SSRN.1697822","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/SSRN.1697822","url":null,"abstract":"There are a significant number of politicians and economists who use pseudo-biblical values to justify their political agenda. The author feels that many of their values are indeed biblical, they represent core values of Sodom and Gomorrah. These very wealthy biblical city-states adopted special laws to discourage immigration and create a society that did everything possible to hurt the indigent members of society. It was also a society that encouraged fraud, an unjust marketplace, and a corrupt legal system. While the Bible has little to say about the ideal economic system or about free markets and competition, it does have a great deal to say about a political-economic system that is indifferent to the welfare of the stranger and justice for all. The Great Recession of 2008 may not have done as much physical damage to us as the “brimstone and fire” that rained down upon Sodom and Gomorrah but it did harm millions of people.","PeriodicalId":269186,"journal":{"name":"Philosophy of Action (Editor's Choice) eJournal","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125919015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
