In one of his former comments he compared fluid power industry’s innovation efforts with attempts to ‘ride a dead horse’ – which is a metaphor of the Dakota Indians. The ambiguity of interpreting Franz Kafka’s novels correlates with the assessment of the circumstances of fluid power’s insufficient innovative strength. In Kafka’s novels Der Prozeß and Das Schloß three classes of actors exist: the leading character, the authorities, and the other people who have arranged with the authority’s curious rules. The authorities never become fully known. Is it the market, the actual and potential customers of fluid power technology, which is not open to breakthrough innovation or is it the management of fluid power industry that puts too much emphasis on financial controlling and on short term business success figures? There are frequent complaints about the lack of innovation in fluid power technology from industrial users, researchers, and the correspondents. It is difficult to clearly identify the culprit or the culprits. Like in Kafka’s novels, all groups are guilty to some extent. But it is clear that a change – if it happens at all – will be initiated by a small group. Have those who complain just been too lazy or too anxious to start a revolt. All who feel like Peter Achten, let’s start an initiative and change things to the better.","PeriodicalId":265141,"journal":{"name":"J. Syst. Control. Therefore, in this work, the load-side converter with a doubly-fed induction generator is controlled and operated as a static synchronous compensator to provide reactive power support to the system. A higher order sliding mode controller with a super-twisting feature is proposed as a robust controller for the load-side converter operation to regulate the reactive power balance and improve the voltage response of the system. The asymptotic stability of the applied control scheme is guaranteed using the Lyapunov stability analysis. MATLAB-based computer simulation studies are conducted to show the efficacy of the proposed control structure while considering the disturbances in load, wind power, and parameter uncertainties.","PeriodicalId":265141,"journal":{"name":"J. In fact, the presence of the unstable zero risks deteriorating or saturating the control law. In order to surmount this problem, a new discrete generalized sliding mode controller for non-minimum phase systems is proposed with a new sliding function called discrete generalized sliding function. Here, the determination of optimal coefficients of the discrete generalized sliding function is proposed in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Using the proposed method, a discrete generalized sliding mode control for non-minimum phase systems with input–output model is presented and compared with the discrete generalized sliding mode controller using the pole placement method. An illustrative example verifies the effectiveness of the proposed technique.","PeriodicalId":265141,"journal":{"name":"J. Syst. Control. The increased configuration of wind turbine instantaneously increases the structural loading of wind turbine components. The prolonged loading on structural components imposes a great impact on the lifetime of the wind turbine and reduces the feasibility of thinner rotor blade. These economical detriments due to the structural damage of turbine are dealt effectively by proposing an anticipatory preview-based control strategy for individual pitching of blades. The proposed multiple point model predictive controller with fuzzy logic switching, exploits the preview wind measurement from the light detection and ranging system which predicts the wind speed in advance. The utmost objective of the proposed controller is its optimized individual blade pitching to reduce the fatigue loads on the wind turbine components using the preview wind data. The blade root bending moment of individual blades and the tower fore-aft deflection which are chosen as the parameters of fatigue stress to be analyzed and controlled. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures and Turbulence 5 MW baseline onshore wind turbine is used for validating the proposed controller in MATLAB simulation. The non-linear wind field is simulated using the TurbSim software, and the short-term and lifetime damage equivalent loads of the wind turbine for the simulated wind field is analyzed using the MLife software of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The proposed controller is compared with the typical model predictive controller and linear quadratic-based controller.","PeriodicalId":265141,"journal":{"name":"J. Syst. Control.
