Since the theory and design of propellers is an integral part of an education in naval architecture, utilization of the RMB testing facilities should naturally accompany traditional classroom propeller theory. Having recently been provided an apparatus for the testing of propellers, students now need an adequate source of propeller models.\u0000 The typical cost to have a specially designed propeller model manufactured for testing either for a thesis project or for classroom study is well beyond the financial means of Webb Institute. Previously, Webb has relied upon the generosity of other institutions with established propeller testing facilities, such as the University of Michigan and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (also referred to as David Taylor Model Basin, or DTMB), for the loan of propeller models. While these borrowed propellers have served their purpose in demonstrating classroom theory, there have been limitations in the applications for which the borrowed propellers could be used. An opportunity for students to see a propeller advance from design to production had yet to be established.

Wave interaction effects on drag were evaluated statistically to obtain a series of algebraic expressions for interference prediction based on form-related parameters and known resistance characteristics of the component monohulls. This technique could be used in early-stage design to predict the calm water resistance of an arbitrary set of component hulls in a trimaran configuration based on their known individual monohull resistance characteristics.\u0000 Five variables: side hull length, longitudinal position, transverse position, and the displacement to length ratio of the center and side component hulls (expressed in English units as D/(.01L)3), each having between two and seven values were used to define a family of 378 trimarans based on Series 64 parent hulls. Resistance for each configuration was calculated using the Total Ship Drag program developed at Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock.\u0000 Interaction effects wer examined both qualitatively and through a multiple linear regression statistical treatment. The results of the regression were used to develop a method for predicting the calm water resistance of a trimaran composed of arbitrarily chose component hulls with known resistance characteristics.

The towing tank has the dimensions of 30m x 1m x 1m. Experiments were carried out for a trimaran with various configurations of outrigger setbacks and hull spacings. Model test results were compared with numerical solutions based on the thin-ship theory and tent functions. They agree well except at high speeds. It was observed that water shipping on the deck during model tests at high speeds. This may cause the measured resistances greater than the theoretically predicted values.

Von Karmen vortex sheets that are periodically shed from bluff bodies induce time-varying lift forces on the body. If the body is not rigid these lift forces can induce significant motion or vibrations, greatly reducing fatigue life. The DeepStar JIP in 2001 contracted Oceanic Consulting Corporation to perform fundamental research into the nature of the forces. A specialized test apparatus was developed to tow a 6 m long segment of a 0.325 m diameter marine riser. A unique feature of the apparatus is its ability to operate in the transcritical regime with Reynolds numbers exceeding 106. The apparatus has two basic modes of operation free VIV and forced VIV and within each of these modes several test variation are possible. In the free mode the test cylinder was mounted on a system of springs and allowed to freely oscillate. In forced mode the cylinder is constrained to follow a sinusoidal motion with prescribed amplitude and frequency. This paper describes the apparatus and illustrates some of the basic results.

These changes are evident in the specific facilities completing these test programs, the quality of test equipment, procedures and results, and the way facilities interact with the designers. This paper reviews the factual history of sailing yacht testing in North America and then puts this history into perspective by reviewing the perceptions of the users, the changes that have been caused by these perceptions, and the resulting current state-of-the-art. Examples of how tank testing is integrated into current design programs are given, and some specific thoughts on ways tank testing can be made more useful are developed. Finally, given the technological advances that have been made over the past thirty years and the increased cost of test programs, renewed research on scale effects is recommended.

Engineers can use these models to assess the effects of wave directionality on structures, and to study effects of swell and wind waves separately, before combining these wave systems to determine their effects together. A frequency interlace technique was used to superimpose swell and wind waves to form a combined wave field. Measured and numerically synthesized results indicated that the quality of the combined wave is comparable to that of a multi-directional wave. The combined wave field is spatially homogeneous and repeatable. Bidirectional spreading was reproduced in frequencies where swell and wind wave spectra overlapped.
