Maize weevils (Sitophilus zeamais) cause a significant loss in quality and quantity during maize storage in tropical regions. Hermetic storage of maize has been shown to be effective in controlling maize weevils in laboratory settings. The objective of this research was to test the effectiveness of hermetic storage containers that could be used by smallholder farmers. Six 208-L (55-gallon) steel barrels were filled with 170 kg (375 lb) of maize with initial weevil populations of 25 live weevils/kg of maize (11 live weevils/lb). The barrels were placed in a room at 27 0 C (81 0 F) under non-hermetic condition for three weevil lifecycles of approximately 40 days each. After 120 days, the weevil population increased to an average of 99 live weevils/kg (45 live weevils/lb). Three barrels were then hermetically sealed. After storage for 21 days, the weevil population was zero live weevils/kg in the hermetically sealed barrels (100% mortality) and an average of 214 live weevils/kg (98 live weevils/lb) in the non-hermetic barrels. Means of barrel oxygen content, ending number of live weevils per kg of maize, test weight (TW), moisture content (MC), temperature and humidity were significantly different between the hermetic and non-hermetic storage treatments. Broken corn and foreign material (BCFM) and mechanical damage (MD) were not significantly different. Hermetically sealed metal barrels for maize storage can control maize weevils and may be an effective storage option for smallholder farmers.","PeriodicalId":249779,"journal":{"name":"2014 ASABE Annual International Meeting","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131501941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 1963, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (formerly Soil Conservation Service) built South River Dam 10A, known locally as Mills Creek Dam, in Augusta County, Virginia, as a significant hazard dam. This multi-purpose structure included both flood control and municipal water supply. By 2005, the hazard classification of the dam changed to high because of the downstream development and the increased risk to public safety from a dam breach. The vegetated auxiliary spillway did not have the capacity, stability, or integrity to pass the probable maximum flood (PMF) event without breaching. There were also several problems with the principal spillway pipe outlet and riser. Rehabilitation of the auxiliary spillway included lowering the crest elevation to increase capacity and armoring the surface with articulated concrete blocks to achieve integrity and stability. Since poor water quality prevented use of the municipal water supply, the water supply component of the dam was removed. The original riser of the principal spillway was abandoned and a new riser was installed. The principal spillway pipe was slip-lined and the concrete outlet structure was replaced by a riprap plunge pool. Cooperation with multiple Federal, state, and local entities was an essential part of this project. The dam is located on USDA Forest Service administered land but is owned by Augusta County. A threatened plant species was found downstream of the site. The lake is a put-and-grow fishery; and there was a flood-monitoring gage in the dam embankment. NRCS completed rehabilitation of this dam in 2013.","PeriodicalId":249779,"journal":{"name":"2014 ASABE Annual International Meeting","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116698072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to develop a human-machine-interface (HMI) based nutrient solution regulation system, which can be applied to hydroponic cultivation of plants. The proposed system includes a personal computer, microcontrollers, flow-meter modules, water quality monitor modules (pH, EC, and DO), ion electrode sensing modules (potassium, calcium, magnesium, etc.), peripheral circuit, power modules, pipe, nutrient solution storage tank, and liquid-regulating valve. The flow rates of five different nutrient solutions are controlled by a microcontroller which regulates the flow control valves. The user can select the desired plant name on the HMI or program the concentrations of nutrient solutions manually, which results in an automatic deployment of nutrient solution for a particular plant (by default, five different compositions of plant nutrient solutions are provided in the database). Meanwhile, the concentrations of nutrient solutions in the cultivation bed are displayed in real-time in the HMI. The experiment was conducted in a cultivation bed (120 cm x 60 cmx 11 cm (LxWxH)) equipped with a light emitting diode (LED) lighting board. The results demonstrate that a range of tolerable concentrations of nutrient solutions can be maintained by using the proposed system.","PeriodicalId":249779,"journal":{"name":"2014 ASABE Annual International Meeting","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132370353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The structure of lignin obtained after pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass determines its use for producing value-added products. One attractive application of the lignin is for use as an antioxidant. In this study, the lignin obtained from ozone and soaking aqueous ammonia pretreatment of wheat straw was characterized in order to reveal its primary structural properties involved in antioxidant activity. The characterization results showed that specific esters bonds in wheat straw lignin such as -C I² -COO-arabinose and –CI³OO-C- were dissociated during the pretreatment, which resulted in a reduced molecular weight and selective release of derivatives from hydroxycinnamic acid such as ferulic acid and I-coumaric acid units. The combination of these factors led to the extracted lignin having a comparable antioxidant activity to that of the currently used industrial antioxidants. The percent inhibition effect was observed to be in the following order: guaiacol > butylated hydroxytoluene > ferulic acid > lignin (86.9±0.34).","PeriodicalId":249779,"journal":{"name":"2014 ASABE Annual International Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130849779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tillage treatments were (i) conventional tillage (CT) with moldboard ploughing to 27 cm depth and (ii) reduced tillage (RT) with a spring tine cultivator to 10 cm depth. The measurements included bulk density (BD) and precompression stress (Pc) chosen as indicators of mechanical strength, and the pore size distribution (PSD) measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The tillage systems, the depth and their interaction had a significant effect on BD, Pc and PSD. In CT, in the topsoil, the soil strength was low and the total porosity n was about 50 %. In the subsoil, n decreased to 43 %. The PSD of CT was uni-modal in topsoil and subsoil in the MIP measurement range. The mean value of the mode r max diminished from the topsoil toward the subsoil (from 2.5 μm to 1.9 μm). In RT, in the topsoil, the soil strength was higher than CT. BD did not vary much according to the depth. The total porosity n of RT was comprised between 40-45 % in the soil profile . The PSD was uni-modal and rmax increased from topsoil ( ≅ 2μm) to subsoil (> 3 μm). This suggested the agglomeration of fine particles under the long-term action of mechanical loads, climatic agents, biological organisms or clay minerals acting as cementing agents. These phenomena could be at the origin of the increase of Pc with the depth without significant modification of BD. Such high values of Pc could be responsible of negative effects on root-growth leading to a more superficial root lateral development.","PeriodicalId":249779,"journal":{"name":"2014 ASABE Annual International Meeting","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125063925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
