Annual mandatory education presents a time and cost demand on flight programs. Infection control was chosen as the mandatory education requirement topic for this study. The test results from the 1995 infection control program completed with a traditional format of teaching were compared with the test results from the 1996 infection control program completed with a self-directed learning packet (SDLP). Methods. A quasi-experimental design was used with a pretest/posttest protocol. Significance was determined using a t -test. Results. Inclusion criteria were met by 38 employees. The mean test score for the 1995 infection control examination was 88.63. The mean test score for the 1996 examination was 98.10. The 9.47 difference in mean scores was found to be significant ( p Conclusion. The purpose of this study was to determine if less expensive SDLPs were effective. Tired of looking at your gradebook and not really knowing what your students know? This is the starting point. I teach calculus in large lectures and because of how we structure things it is entirely possible for a student to pass (or better) and not really know much of the material. This leads to problems in subsequent math classes, but also in other disciplines when students are asked to apply the mathematics they’ve ostensibly learned. Standards-based grading breaks things down into smaller pieces that can be assessed with low-stakes quizzes.
