Bernier
ANTHROPOLOGY OF WORK Guest editor: Greag Teal / ANTHROPOLOGIE DU TRAVAIL Sous la direction de Greg Teal

Peressini
ANTHROPOLOGY OF WORK Guest editor: Greag Teal / ANTHROPOLOGIE DU TRAVAIL Sous la direction de Greg Teal

Invisible Labour, Transnational Lives: Gendered Work andNew Social Fields in Coastal Philippines
Invisible Labour, Transnational Lives: Gendered Work and\u0000New Social Fields in Coastal Philippines
Feminist research on gender relations in fishing communities has established that through a narrowing of focus upon maritime pursuits, the coast is masculinized and men’s lives are privileged over women’s. The invisibility of women’s labour in coastal communities becomes particularly acute in situations where the labour is performed somewhere else, as is the case here. This comparison of gendered work practices and ideologies in some Philippines coastal households reveals that women’s work is crucial to the reproduction of fisheries sectors. But more than this, most coastal households are not sustained primarily through the fishery, nor through the labour of a male breadwinner. Nonetheless, local gender ideologies overstate men’s contributions to livelihood and understate the economic and social significance of women’s work: productive and reproductive; local and extra-local. Increasingly, the exporting of women’s labour "in service" is both a means of household livelihood and ironically, a strategy for servicing the national debt. Gendered class and cultural affinities are now articulated through transnational social fields creating new forms of consciousness and possibilities for political expression.
ANTHROPOLOGY OF WORK Guest editor: Greag Teal / ANTHROPOLOGIE DU TRAVAIL Sous la direction de Greg Teal

Creating Connected Identities Among Japanese Company Employees: Learning to be Members of Department Store Work Communities
Creating Connected Identities Among Japanese Company Employees: Learning to be Members of Department Store Work Communities
This paper looks at the meanings, values, and idioms associated with work for members of Japanese permanent employment jobs in a sector of society where this has not previously been well explored - large-retailing organizations. It discusses the boundary markers that distinguish members from outsiders and marginals, and explains the ambiguous identities of part-timers and "helper clerks." The initial year in a Japanese permanent employment job is presented as an intense training period and also a liminal period involving the creation of new social persona and their aggregation into corporate work communities. The paper shows how new department store employees are socialized through training programs, company retreats, and other practices, then discusses the ongoing channeling of employee identities into structured networks of senpai-khai (senior-junior) and entry-year cohort relationships. It also discusses cases of "individualists" who do not fit easily into the company as community ideology. Based on research conducted from the mid-1980s to early 1990s, the paper provides a comparative update to earlier ethnographies of Japanese work in the permanent employment System.
ANTHROPOLOGY OF WORK Guest editor: Greag Teal / ANTHROPOLOGIE DU TRAVAIL Sous la direction de Greg Teal

Teal
This paper is an attempt at synthesizing an empirical\u0000and a theoretical critique of the cultural model of\u0000industrial organization, by focussing on Korean industrial\u0000organization and industrial relations in Korea, and\u0000on a large Korean industrial organization that was based\u0000in Quebec. As a counter weight to the cultural argument,\u0000the paper shows that mechanisms established to\u0000socially integrate workers into the organization in Korea\u0000are weak, and that management has had to rely instead\u0000on authoritarianism and on the State to ensure worker\u0000compliance. The paper then presents and discusses the\u0000social organization of a Korean industrial transplant;\u0000while there was a managerial discourse of participation\u0000and diffusion of power, the gap between this discourse\u0000and the real diffusion of power was such that a sizable\u0000minority of employees did not comply with managerial\u0000objectives.
ANTHROPOLOGY OF WORK Guest editor: Greag Teal / ANTHROPOLOGIE DU TRAVAIL Sous la direction de Greg Teal
