In a typical transmit-receive module, the PA consumes around 70% of the total energy and, being the last stage of the transmitter, it is the main responsible for the overall system linearity. However, efficiency and linearity are contrasting features, more still in applications that make use of spectrum-efficient digital modulation schemes, such as 5G systems or new high throughput satellites. The ability of the Doherty architecture of operating at high efficiency at significant output power back-off has led the RF and microwave community to re-discover the Doherty concept and adapt it to the requirements of modern high frequency transmitters both for terrestrial and space applications. Moreover, its implementation on GaN technology has the potentials to offer game-changing advantage. This workshop aims to present recent progress on integrated Doherty Amplifiers and all the aspects related to their implementation, covering state-of-the-art GaN technology, advanced experimental characterization techniques at device/ circuit level, as well as various Doherty HPA MMIC implementations. Its primary purpose is the reception of AIS signals from a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with the help of a newly developed deployable helix antenna. The bus architecture follows a low-cost approach – making use of commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) components. The main challenge for the bus design was to reduce complexity as a baseline concept for achieving an adequate in-orbit lifetime with acceptable risk, requiring only a fraction of the overall costs of conventional satellite approaches. The AISat-1 is now 5 years in orbit and still operating. Thus, the challenges, the issues we experienced as well as the conclusions are presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":232426,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Space Hardware and Radio Conference (SHaRC)","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123264392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In spacecraft and launchers these networks can be used to connect sensors to a central on board computer or to provide a communication link between the different subsystems. This contributes to a reduced cable harness, a key driver in overall spacecraft mass and design complexity. This paper presents an application for a launcher mounted multi-camera system based on low power IR-UWB sensor nodes. In combination with a modified high-throughput MAC layer from the IEEE 802.15.4 standard it is able to provide an update rate of multiple frames per second, where traditional sensor network systems would need half a minute to deliver a single frame. In addition, it is not interfering with critical telecommand/telemetry radio links of the launch vehicle due to the nature of the wideband transmission.","PeriodicalId":232426,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Space Hardware and Radio Conference (SHaRC)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127453462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
