We use a carefully constructed sample of over one thousand farmers in the epicenter, and build a three-stage model of agricultural production decisions across multiple input and multiple output choices, indebtedness from multiple sources, and suicide via an IPWRA (inverse probability weighted regression adjustment) treatment model to trace the potential roots of the situation. Results show that the use of informal credit from commission agents by farmers accounts for ten percentage points (or twenty percent) of all suicides in our sample, regardless of other household factors and choices.","PeriodicalId":231853,"journal":{"name":"HEN: Prevention (Sub-Topic)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114402923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Awoleye, Chris Thron","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.2645806","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.2645806","url":null,"abstract":"Background: Nigeria has an estimated 3.5 million HIV positive individuals, ranking third worldwide. This study analyzed the determinants of HIV infection to improve HIV programming in Nigeria and developing countries. Methodology: The methodology used was a literature review of grey and electronic databases of reviewed journals, and application of Dahlgren and Whitehead (1991) determinants of health model. A total of 45 publications (21 reports and 24 articles were reviewed).Results: New infections are emerging at increasing rates among individuals engaging in sexual relationships such as men having sex with men (MSM) and female sex work (FSW). The level of political commitment to HIV control is extremely low: currently, the government of Nigeria provides less than 10 percent of the funding for HIV control efforts in Nigeria, the rest coming from foreign sources and private sectors. Political, work environment, gender, healthcare service and lifestyle determinants are predominant over others.Conclusion: HIV control in Nigeria is financially over-dependent on foreign interventions. Political actions are required to address sexual orientations. Most-at-risk populations require education, legal requirements, and healthcare services in order to minimize new infection.","PeriodicalId":231853,"journal":{"name":"HEN: Prevention (Sub-Topic)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129820925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, I first review how the marketing, health and nutrition claims made on packaging create “health halos” and make foods appear healthier than they are, leading to higher consumption yet lower perceived calorie intake. I then show how packaging design (cues, shapes and sizes) bias people’s perception of quantity and increase their preference for supersized packages and portions that appear smaller than they are. Finally, I examine the evidence on the effectiveness of public policies designed to limit the biasing effects of packaging on food perceptions and preferences.","PeriodicalId":231853,"journal":{"name":"HEN: Prevention (Sub-Topic)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129380865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
