They were heroes because of what they accomplished during their professional careers but all three turned out to have committed serious crimes. Disclosure is painful, not only for the hero who comes to fall but also for the community that finds itself redefining moral standards when losing a celebrated insider. For this reason, the crimes of these three men have been concealed and kept secret for years. Who are considered to be heroes and which elements are relevant to understand the process heroes may go through when they start sliding on the slippery slope, and, eventually, fall into the abyss of disgrace? What is the role that (social) media play in the demolition of their reputation and how do heroes perceive their own downfall and respond to it? Die kritiek richt zich op diverse aspecten van vreemdelingendetentie, \u0000waaronder de detentieduur, de detentieomstandigheden en de rechterlijke toetsing \u0000van de inbewaringstelling. Dit heeft geleid tot een kleinschalige herorientatie \u0000van vreemdelingendetentie in 2010 (Kamerstukken II 2009/10, 19 637, nr. 1353) \u0000en enkele pilots met alternatieven voor vreemdelingendetentie zoals een meldplicht \u0000en vrijheidsbeperking in 2012 (Kamerstukken II 2011/12, 19 637, \u0000nr. 1483). De kritiek is sindsdien echter niet verstomd, getuige de kritische rapporten \u0000die sinds deze aanpassingen verschenen zijn. Zo stelde de Nationale \u0000ombudsman in de zomer van 2012 (2012: 37) nog dat ‘vreemdelingen in vreemdelingenbewaring \u0000verblijven onder een niet passend regime waardoor de eerbiediging \u0000van grondrechten ernstig onder druk komt te staan. (…) Het huidige regime \u0000doet geen recht aan het karakter van een bestuursrechtelijke maatregel. Het enige \u0000doel van de bewaring is te voorkomen dat een vreemdeling zich onttrekt aan uitzetting. \u0000De maatregel is niet bedoeld als bestraffing.
