These include both social and technical strategies\u0000 – only some of which accord with state expectations – such as leaving\u0000 behind family members, building houses on farmland, using labour-saving\u0000 technologies, switching from rice to cash crops, or even abandoning\u0000 fields. Using specific household cases, the chapter demonstrates how\u0000 peasants draw on a wide repertoire of available resources to handle their\u0000 situation. Based on ethnographic field research, it does so mainly\u0000 through the example of one left-behind woman and her choice of harvesting\u0000 technologies. Proposing a repertoire perspective on technological\u0000 choice, the chapter sheds light on the diverse socio-technical factors\u0000 behind such decision-making. It argues against a linear perspective of\u0000 technological development, showing why it makes sense for farmers\u0000 to simultaneously draw on a repertoire of old and new technologies,\u0000 rather than simply opting for mechanization in order to compensate\u0000 for the migrated labour. It argues that the Chinese state has been a major driver\u0000 of the current situation through its rural policies, which provide both\u0000 constraints and opportunities with regard to possible household strategies\u0000 at the nexus of farming and migration. Special attention is paid to the\u0000 widespread adoption of post-Green Revolution farming technologies\u0000 that have set free agricultural labour. The chapter argues that there has been a complex reconfiguration\u0000 of the repertoire of rice farming knowledge.
