Many travel related infections, including malaria, can be much more severe in people who are HIV positive particularly if they are immunosuppressed. Good pre-travel planning is essential. Interruption of HIV medication due to travel plans is dangerous and should be avoided. In adults, the CD4 count is the key blood test that gives a measure of the level of immunosuppression and helps quantify risk of infection and guides vaccination. Inactivated vaccines are safe to administer, but may be less effective – especially at lower CD4 counts. Certain live vaccines are contraindicated for people living with HIV, and some can only be administered if the patient’s CD4 count is greater than 200cells/ml (or a CD4 proportion of > 15 percent in children). Antiretroviral (ART) medication has the potential for multiple drug-drug interactions. Before prescribing any additional medication be sure to check for drug-drug interactions.","PeriodicalId":216921,"journal":{"name":"Viral Pandemics","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125202565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this excerpt from “The Great Influenza”, John M. Barry describes in detail about many things relating to this epidemic, including the side of a scientist and the methodologies of research. The author analyzed the tactics and qualities of scientists of the time to paint a picture of uncertainty as well as certainty that faced the early 20th century gripped by the flu. To convey to his audience what a scientist’s or researcher’s role consists of, Barry uses figurative language, syntax, and diction to elaborate.","PeriodicalId":216921,"journal":{"name":"Viral Pandemics","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126919936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
