The business case to address burnout is multifaceted and includes various issues for patients and health care professionals, such as direct costs from staff turnover, indirect costs from staff turnover, lost revenue associated with decreased productivity, malpractice litigation risk, and other financial risks related to the organization’s long-term viability. Enlightened health care leaders deliberately invest in and labor to create esprit de corps as a core component of their business strategy. They do this because esprit de corps makes a difference for patients and also their bottom line.","PeriodicalId":215476,"journal":{"name":"Mayo Clinic Strategies To Reduce Burnout","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130787236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social capital comprises the talent, knowledge, goodwill, trust, skill, and interconnectedness of people. Social capital is a critical characteristic of organizations and the ingredient that allows people to work together for a common purpose. Organizations need objective data to understand the experience and well-being of their health care professionals. A baseline measurement is necessary to assess the current state and to evaluate progress toward an ideal future state. Objective measures of the efficiency of the practice environment can also serve as improvement targets and often provide continuous real time data on progress without burdening staff with repeated surveys.","PeriodicalId":215476,"journal":{"name":"Mayo Clinic Strategies To Reduce Burnout","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125770172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The creation of esprit de corps has the potential to make a difference on a broad scale, with lasting impact for patients, health care professionals, leaders, organizations, and the communities we serve. As leaders and health care professionals, we must partner and embrace mitigating burnout and cultivating esprit de corps for everyone caring for patients, for the benefit of patients.","PeriodicalId":215476,"journal":{"name":"Mayo Clinic Strategies To Reduce Burnout","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131436320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
