However, these studies fail to consider the differences between channel characteristics, i.e. they do not consider that channels are on different frequencies.\u0000 In this paper, we fill this gap by providing a technique that classifies channels based on their operating frequency. We enable each cognitive device to choose the best channel depending on its traffic demand. We focus on the IEEE 802.22 physical layer in order to analyze and classify channels, and we propose the aware channel assignment algorithm for cognitive networks (Aaron). Aaron assigns channels to cognitive devices with the goal of satisfying the capacity demand of the largest number of end-users in order to maximize the throughput.\u0000 We evaluate Aaron using an ad-hoc event-driven simulator for CNs. In addition we compare it with the Dumb algorithm, where cognitive devices are not able to characterize channels, and with the Upper Bound, where no packet is lost due to the channel assignment algorithm. Simulation studies demonstrate that Aaron performs considerably better than Dumb and very close to the Upper Bound.","PeriodicalId":202655,"journal":{"name":"CoRoNet '11","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127360960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in realistic cases, primary users are non-time-slotted, which means primary users can be active or not active at any time during the whole secondary frame duration. In not-time-slotted CRNs, it is difficult to obtain good performance by using the traditional half duplex spectrum sensing scheme. In this paper, we propose a novel full duplex spectrum sensing scheme for non-time-slotted CRNs. We derive the probability of detection and the probability of false alarm with random arrival/departure of primary users' traffic and develop a continuous time Markov chain model for non-time-slotted CRNs. We analyze the effect of bandwidth, antennas placement error, and transmit signal amplitude difference on the performance of non-time-slotted CRNs. Numerical results show that the bandwidth, which is the most unavoidable imperfect factor, has little impact on performance of non-time-slotted CRNs. Therefore, the full duplex spectrum sensing scheme can be effectively used in wideband CRNs.","PeriodicalId":202655,"journal":{"name":"CoRoNet '11","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116950757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the situation where a single cellular operator improves the performance of its network by upgrading its existing cell-sites to opportunistically and cost-efficiently utilize secondary spectrum resources. We determine the available capacity for such networks under interference-margin constraint rules and use terrain-based propagation models to retrieve realistic coverage predictions. We report on our findings from a particularly challenging environment in Western Germany, where border and geographical conditions impose significant limitations on the efficient use of whitespaces. However, our methodology and use-case scenarios are generic, and the specific geographical study can be seen as a blend of worst-case approximation of spectrum diversity and best-case scenario for coexistence between secondary systems.","PeriodicalId":202655,"journal":{"name":"CoRoNet '11","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123984759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even today, there is a strong belief in the community that the cost and performance of sensing solutions don't meet the stringent requirements of Opportunistic Spectrum Access (OSA). In this paper, the cost and measured performance of a sensing solution is studied. The solution is versatile, and performance/cost analysis is performed for sensing of Digital Broadcast TV for OSA in the TV White Spaces and for sensing of LTE signals for improved coexistence with and for LTE networks. We show how the solution could be used to upgrade mobile devices with sensing capabilities, or as a standalone spectrum sensing prototype.","PeriodicalId":202655,"journal":{"name":"CoRoNet '11","volume":"447 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122149965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our work not only incorporates singular sensing performance measures in terms of the probability of missed detection and false alarm, but also takes into account the likeliness of missed detection of busy-idle channel state transitions between consecutive sensing executions. In this paper, we develop two metrics to quantify the spectrum sensing performance of a singular node, namely the spectrum efficiency for detecting available spectrum and the sensing robustness for avoiding interference to primary users, and present a general framework for deriving the desired results, which accommodates various primary channel occupancy patterns.","PeriodicalId":202655,"journal":{"name":"CoRoNet '11","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131071246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
