The various actors use data to make decisions: the larger the value, the better (i.e. more informed) the decision. At every moment, individual actors have the choice of making a decision or else to defer decision to a later time. However, the longer they wait, the lower the value of the data they hold. To counter-balance the effect of time discounting, we define an algebraic operation that we call aggregation, whereby two or more actors integrate their data in the hope of increasing its value.\u0000 Our main contribution is a formal look at the value of time-discounted information and at the algebra of its aggregation. We allow aggregation of time-discounted information to proceed in an arbitrary, not necessarily pairwise, manner. Our model relates aggregation decisions to the ensuing value of information and suggests natural thresholding strategies for the aggregation of the information collected by sets of network actors. A sensor network with the mission of intrusion detection is used throughout as an illustrative example. The accuracy of our theoretical predictions was confirmed by simulating a number of realistic scenarios.","PeriodicalId":198274,"journal":{"name":"MiSeNet '13","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126249679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is challenging because of the combined effects of the stochastic nature of event arrival and duration and the stochastic nature of a sensor's sleep-awake schedule. These various stochastic processes need to be modelled jointly in order to be able to reason, with any degree of confidence, about the quality of the event detection. The main contribution of this paper is a framework for assessing our confidence about the occurrence of events in sensor networks. Our framework models the interaction between the stochastic nature of an event arrival, the event duration, and the sensor sleep/awake schedule. By employing our framework, it is possible to configure individual sensor duty cycles to meet the requirements of mission-oriented applications in terms of timely and accurate information about events of interest.","PeriodicalId":198274,"journal":{"name":"MiSeNet '13","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124281232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, preserving two or more combination of these properties simultaneously is harder to achieve and often overlooked by the research community. In this paper, we describe a connectivity preserving topology control algorithm which combines two important properties, e.g., (a) minimum energy, and (b) fault tolerance. For the topology generated by the algorithm, we provide an analytical model to estimate its structural density. The accuracy of the analytical model is validated with extensive simulation results.","PeriodicalId":198274,"journal":{"name":"MiSeNet '13","volume":"200 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124482903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human users need to task the network to help them achieve mission objectives, while humans (sometimes the same individuals) are also sources of mission-critical information. We propose a natural language-based conversational approach to supporting human-machine working in mission-oriented sensor networks. We present a model for human-machine and machine-machine interactions in a realistic mission context, and evaluate the model using an existing surveillance mission scenario. The model supports the flow of conversations from full natural language to a form of Controlled Natural Language (CNL) amenable to machine processing and automated reasoning, including high-level information fusion tasks. We introduce a mechanism for presenting the gist of verbose CNL expressions in a more convenient form for human users. We show how the conversational interactions supported by the model include requests for expansions and explanations of machine-processed information.","PeriodicalId":198274,"journal":{"name":"MiSeNet '13","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124729638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent breakthroughs in wireless energy transfer based on rechargeable lithium batteries provide a promising application of mobile vehicles. These mobile vehicles act as mobile chargers to transfer energy wirelessly to static sensors in an efficient way. In this talk, we discuss some of our recent results on several charging and coverage problems involving multiple mobile chargers. In collaborative mobile charging, a fixed charging location, called base station (BS), provides source of energy to mobile chargers, which in turn are allowed to recharge each other while collaboratively charge static sensors. The objective is to ensure sensor coverage while maximizing the ratio of the amount of payload energy (used to charge sensors) to overhead energy (used to move mobile chargers from one location to another), such that none of the sensors will run out of battery. Here, sensor coverage spans both dimensions of time and space. We first consider the uniform case, where all sensors consume energy at the same rate, and propose an optimal scheduling scheme that can cover a one-dimensional (1-D) WSN with infinite length. Then, we present several greedy scheduling solutions to 1-D WSNs with non-uniform sensors and 2-D WSNs, both of which are NP-hard. Finally, we study another variation, in which all mobile chargers have batteries of unlimited capacity without resorting to a BS for recharging. The objective is then to deploy and schedule a minimum number of mobile chargers that can cover all sensors. Again, we provide an optimal solution to this problem in a 1-D WSN with uniform sensors and several greedy solutions with competitive approximation ratios to the problem setting of 1-D WSNs with non-uniform sensors and 2-D WSNs, respectively.","PeriodicalId":198274,"journal":{"name":"MiSeNet '13","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123480387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The global reachability verification considers configurations such as forwarding information and awake/dormant schedule as generated by WSN protocols and algorithms. Our contribution is two-fold. First, we create a scalable model that represents the end-to-end reachability of WSN based on node configuration using Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) and Symbolic Model Checking, and then define generic reachability properties using Computational Tree Logic (CTL). Second, we encode the Mission-Oriented WSN topological information using Boolean functions to verify constraint-based reachability properties for WSN, and show soundness and completeness.\u0000 We implement this in a tool called SensorChecker. The scalability and performance of SensorChecker is validated with very large WSN networks (10s of thousand of nodes) and wake-up scheduling parameters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first formal approach for verifying large-scale WSN network configuration.","PeriodicalId":198274,"journal":{"name":"MiSeNet '13","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125927505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we focus on many-to-one mission-oriented sensor networks, where data are collected from multiple resources to one data sink. A critical component in realizing real-time services over such a network is the estimation of end-to-end delay. This problem has been widely investigated for wireless sensor networks under various assumptions such as Poisson packet arrivals or infinite queue length. In this work, we consider a more practical network setting in which the packets need to be forwarded to a data sink along multi-hop communications, the packet arrival rate and service rate are both generally distributed, and the queue length is finite. Our analytical expressions of the G/G/1/K queuing model under the popular protocol interference model when CSMA/CA is adopted for MAC control are carefully derived. An extensive simulation study is carried out and the results indicate that the proposed G/G/1/K queueing model outperforms M/M/1/K and G/G/1 under a high network load while it provides competitive results when the network is lightly loaded.","PeriodicalId":198274,"journal":{"name":"MiSeNet '13","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124573153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This delivery obviously depends on the mobility of the vehicles (e.g. with carry-and-forward). However, the mobility of the vehicles is not only affected by the vehicle itself, but also by some external means, such as the signal operations of traffic lights. The red light stops the vehicles at the intersection, which will increase the delivery delay of the messages carried by the vehicle with waiting time. However, the red light can also increase the opportunities of vehicles moving behind to catch up with the waited vehicles in forwarding messages. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the traffic lights on data delivery in VANETs, and we estimate the expected data delivery delay along a path with multiple traffic lights. Our intensive simulations verify the proposed model, and evaluate the influence of the traffic lights on data delivery.","PeriodicalId":198274,"journal":{"name":"MiSeNet '13","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129235631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For good accuracy, the training set of sample fingerprints, each mapping a fingerprint to a location, should be sufficiently large to be well-representative of the environment in terms of both spatial coverage and temporal coverage. Unfortunately, the task of collecting these samples can be tedious and labor-intensive because one must label each location that is being surveyed. On the other hand, fingerprints without location information are abundant and can easily be collected and so recent studies have tried to capitalize on these unlabeled fingerprints to improve the training set. The paper investigates how this goal can be achieved via graph regularization based on Total Variation (TV). TV is highly effective for semi-supervised learning in image processing but it is not clear whether its success can be transferred to indoor location fingerprinting.","PeriodicalId":198274,"journal":{"name":"MiSeNet '13","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126030318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
