Twenty-five adult female albino rats were used for the study. They were divided equally into\u00005 treatment groups of: A – no treatment; B – iodine treatment only on the first day; C – iodine treatment for 7 days;\u0000D – Costus afer stem juice extract only on the first day; and E – Costus afer stem juice extract for 7 days. The rats\u0000were aseptically wounded on their dorsum under ketamine hydrochloride anaesthesia. They were treated according\u0000to their groups and closely monitored till the wounds healed. On healing, the rats were euthanized and samples of\u0000the healed skin were collected and processed for immunohistochemical staining using antibodies for e-cadherin. It\u0000was found that group D showed highest intensity of e-cadherin expression among the treatment groups, suggesting\u0000the influence of Costus afer stem juice extract on the process of mesenchymal-epithelial transition
Objectives: Osteoporosis is a silent, progressive, systemic skeletal disease characterized by impaired bone architecture\u0000with decreased bone mass density, affecting mainly women. Statins, inhibitors of HMG-CoA-reductase, seem to interfere\u0000with bone formation exerting anabolic and anti-resorptive effect. The aim of the present study is to investigate the\u0000effect of simvastatin on size parameters and bone density of mandible and femur, in an ovariectomized rat model of\u0000osteoporosis.\u0000Methods: 50 Wistar female rats were randomized in five groups (n=10). Groups 1, 2,3 were ovariectomized, 4 and\u00005 serve as controls. Groups 2, 3 and 5 were treated with simvastatin (0.5mg/kg/daily per os). Size parameters of the\u0000isolated femur, mandible and uterus, BMD via dual energy X-Ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and serum interleukin-13\u0000(IL-13) were estimated.\u0000Results: DEXA results showed significant decrease of BMD in ovariectomized group / controls while statins treatment\u0000decreased the severity of BMD lose. The serum IL-13, as osteogenesis index, seems to be positively influenced by\u0000statins treatment. Conclusions: Statins treatment seems to restore the decreased femur and mandible parameters and\u0000uterus weight in experimental menopause following ovariectomy.
