Čadek","doi":"10.2307/j.ctv18gfz8w.8","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv18gfz8w.8","url":null,"abstract":"High-resolution observations of Sgr A* have revealed a wide variety of phenomena, ranging from intense rapid flares to quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), making this object an ideal system to study the properties of low luminosity accreting black holes. In this paper, we use a pseudospectral algorithm to construct and evolve a threedimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model of the accretion disk in Sgr A*. Assuming a hybrid thermal– nonthermal emission scheme and calibrating the parameters by observations, we show that the MHD turbulence in the environment of Sgr A* can by itself only produce factor two fluctuations in luminosity. These fluctuations cannot explain the magnitude of flares observed in this system. However, we also demonstrate that external forcing of the accretion disk, which may be generated by the “clumpy material” raining down onto the disk from the large-scale flow, do produce outbursts qualitatively similar to those observed by XMM-Newton in X-rays and by ground-based facilities in the near infrared. Strong, but short-term QPOs emerge naturally in the simulated light curves. This essay argues that the Dewey-Bourne debate is not just a vital dispute over the United States ’ role in the war and the world, but that it also must be seen as a crucial moment for understanding fractures in progressive politics and debates over projects that presume to cultivate an educated citizenry. Focusing on Dewey and Bourne ’ s developing ideas from 1914 through 1918, with an emphasis on concepts evolving in and from Dewey ’ s Democracy and Education and Bourne ’ s cultural criticism, the essay explores their core disagreements about the relationship between education and progressive reform, the role of intellectuals in the state, the consequences of intervention in the war and the use of force, and democratic citizenship in national and international contexts. We analyzed milk from twenty Polish Holstein– Friesian cows for basic composition, number of somatic cells, acidity, and color in terms of the Comission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) lightness*redness*yellowness (L*a*b*) system, and 24 cheeses in terms of texture, acidity, color in terms of the CIE L*a*b* system, and organoleptic parameters in summer and winter. We determined the effects of the season and the fat content of milk on the pH, titratable acidity, color, firmness, and stickiness of the cheese. Cheeses from summer milk showed greater acidification than those from winter milk (p ≤ 0.05). Skimmed milk cheeses from both seasons showed increased firmness and stickiness, and worse organoleptic characteristics, particularly in taste and consistency, than whole milk cheeses (p ≤ 0.05). The highest level of yellow (b*) was found in whole milk summer cheeses; those produced in winter were 16% less yellow. Milk from traditional family farms is a valuable raw ingredient for the production of soft, unripe rennet cheese. However, the variability of organoleptic characteristics related to the season should be taken into account in cheese production. M ethods: Patients (n =121) w ere random ly assigned to either the vocational rehabilitation program m e or usual outpatient care initiated by the treating rheum atologist. Follow -up lasted for 2 years. Program m e costs w ere estim ated using tim e registrations and other societal costs using quarterly cost questionnaires filled out by the patients. To estim ate quality-adjusted life years, utility w as assessed using the EuroQ ol classification system , EuroQ ol rating scale, Short Form 6D , and Tim e Trade-O ff. Results: A s part of the vocational rehabilitation program m e, patients on average m ade a total of 7.1 consultations and the total tim e spent by the m ultidisciplinary team am ounted to 12.7 hours per patient. Program m e costs w ere estim ated at (cid:128) 1426, of w hich about 20% w ere tim e and travel costs incurred by the patients. These costs w ere outw eighed by savings on m edical and productivity costs, but non-significantly so. Except for the program m e costs, no significant differences w ere observed in health-care consum ption, productivity, costs or quality-adjusted life years. Conclusion: Program m e costs w ere non-significantly outw eighed by savings on other costs. From a societal perspective, it rem ains unclear w hether the program m e reduces or increases costs. M oreover, program m e costs cannot be justified by a gain in quality-adjusted life years.
