Achieving sustainable development requires understanding the linkages within ecosystems and how they support or constrain human development. Improving human development without exceeding planetary boundaries is critical as exceeding such boundaries risks irreversible changes with serious impacts on human development. Dr. Smith presses further by stating that unfortunately, the planetary boundaries for atmospheric CO2, biodiversity extinctions, flows of phosphorus and nitrogen, and global forest cover have already been exceeded.\u0000\u0000This means that we need to take action to reverse those aforementioned factors to safe levels. Science can help manage our impact on the planet and science plays a vital role in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).\u0000\u0000Resilience, resilience, resilience! The Caribbean must transform many of its economies, ecosystems and development with climate change in mind. Without strong systems in place, climate change will make easy work of our already fragile region. Human capital is key. Education must play a core role in development and the World Bank indicates that human capacity building is critical to strengthen economic resources and mobility. {"title":"Advancing Sustainable Natural Resource Policy in the Caribbean","authors":"","doi":"10.33277/cesare/001.001.03","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33277/cesare/001.001.03","url":null,"abstract":"The islands and territories of the Caribbean region are home to a variety of unique ecosystems that contribute to human wellbeing in numerous ways. They are also the source of tremendous, yet volatile economic value.\u0000\u0000Despite their importance, Professor Schuhmann suggests that these ecosystems and the goods and services that they provide continue to be threatened by local and global stressors. Local impacts on the natural environment are often driven by the basic need to exploit land, water and coastal resources for economic gain. Yet, this exploitation often comes at a real economic cost.\u0000\u0000Professor Schuhmann’s paper provides a comprehensive overview of the importance of conservation policy in the Caribbean region. He presents many salient points that recognize the implicit economic value of the natural environment. This paper digs deeper and explores a set of recommendations for researchers to make their efforts more relevant and impactful.\u0000\u0000The author sums the problem neatly with the following quotation: “[…] we can do a better job at connecting our research to policy outcomes and directives. Academic researchers often produce only vague visions of a sustainable future without connections to clearly defined policy actions that will move us forward”\u0000\u0000Research needs to be driven by non-monetary gains and easily communicated to the non-scientific community, involving local stakeholders in all aspects of research, from inception to dissemination of findings. {"title":"The Way Ahead for Coastal and Ocean Ecosystems in the Wider Caribbean","authors":"R. Mahon, P. This is the core message presented by the\u0000leading coastal and marine researchers in the Caribbean. The Wider Caribbean is an\u0000extremely diverse region with complex ecosystems underlying the many marine resources\u0000that we heavily depend on. Equally complex, and often convoluted, are the organizations\u0000that govern coastal and marine management, research its resources, and implement its\u0000policy framework. The “transboundary nature” of our unique ecosystems means that\u0000innovative solutions are required.\u0000\u0000The authors present major challenges to bringing about change, stating the need for a clear\u0000path from project initialization to mobilization, shifting “mental models” to a reality.\u0000Stakeholders will need to find their niche within the web of issues, identifying common\u0000goals, and implementing changes that maximize outcomes. Over 25 regional and\u0000sub-regional organizations are already on the ground, yet, the authors suggest that leaving\u0000their coordination all to chance, is grossly short-sighted and “irresponsible”.\u0000\u0000A multilevel institutional approach is already underway, led by the Global Environment\u0000Facility (GEF), Caribbean Large Marine Ecosystem and Adjacent Areas (CLME) Project.\u0000The CLME Project covers the entire Wider Caribbean Region from the mouth of the\u0000Amazon River through Central America, the Greater and Lesser Antilles to the Bahamas,\u0000and seeks multi-institutional collaboration over the 10-year period of 2015-2025.\u0000\u0000The major regional and sub-regional organisations with responsibility for the marine\u0000environment have signed on as have more than 25 countries at the ministerial level. The\u0000authors clearly outline pushing the CLME+ Initiative forward through proper\u0000documentation of historical, current and future projects, as well as establishing a network\u0000of regional ambassadors to implement needed change and planning. Weaving through a multitude of issues related to the Caribbean’s energy\u0000landscape, the author guides the reader through the unique systems powering the\u0000CARICOM’s energy demand.\u0000\u0000Caribbean nations are challenged by crippling energy costs (roughly USD $0.35/kWh) and\u0000import bills to fuel their growing economies. Although energy policy has been on the rise,\u0000some Caribbean states are not only lagging behind with fundamental changes, but\u0000significantly contribute to global carbon emissions (Trinidad and Tobago secured 3rd place\u0000for global CO2 emissions per capita).\u0000\u0000With changing climate regimes in the region, renewable energy systems are becoming the\u0000cornerstones for change, providing ample opportunity for wind, solar and hydro systems\u0000to proliferate. Yet the Caribbean faces many challenges. Economies of scale are not in the\u0000region’s favour and major policy implementation is needed to open more doors for\u0000sustainable energy integration. There are leaders in the Caribbean however, and countries\u0000such as Jamaica, Belize and Suriname and ushering the region to the forefront of global\u0000change.\u0000\u0000Dr. Koon Koon suggests that the region needs to create major financial solutions to promote\u0000the development of innovative energy projects.
