A survey of 33 questions was applied to 25 participants; questions were taken from the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (Oxford, 1990) and adapted to the context of e-tandem. Data show that these students used a variety of learning strategies when they participated in the program. Most of the participants usually and always used 7 strategies under the category of cognitive, 5 from memory, 1 from compensatory, 2 metacognitive, 2 affective and 2 social strategies. These strategies are: finding speaking opportunities, planning, listening to music and videos in English, finding ways to interact better, use of previous knowledge, memorization of words and pronunciation, use of new words, setting goals, correcting their mistakes, relaxation, motivation, socialization, and listening in context. On the other hand, 3 cognitive, 2 memory, 3 compensatory, 1 metacognitive, 2 affective and 4 social strategies were never or seldom used by the majority of students. These strategies are: meeting native speakers, imitating accents, using mental images, guessing, using synonyms, gestures, reviewing content, learning about culture, and asking for learning tips. These results suggest training students in the effective use of learning strategies during the teaching process so that they can benefit more from the virtual interactions in e-tandem learning.","PeriodicalId":188419,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Academic Conference on Teaching, Learning, and Education","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114224288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In line with these trends, South African higher education has adopted a “participatory” framework of assessment. Using a Foucauldian theoretical lens, this paper highlights some of the forms of disciplinary power and control that are carried within the new forms of participatory assessment. Empirical evidence is drawn from assessment practices observed in certain lectures in a South African University. Data is analysed through a Foucauldian lens wherein he forges a connection between disciplinary power, control and regulation (Foucault, 1980). The paper then describes the technologies of disciplinary power that play out within the participatory assessment practices and demonstrates what these technologies of power do to assessors and students when they become involved in it. The paper argues that participatory assessment in some respects epitomizes progressive educational themes yet, when studied with an eye toward power reveals several contradictions and paradoxes.","PeriodicalId":188419,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Academic Conference on Teaching, Learning, and Education","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129677729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data was obtained through a community service program that included elementary school teachers in West Bandung Regency. The program went well, and the teacher expressed his understanding of the pedagogical competence of teachers in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, however, the observations on implementation indicated 1) the use of digital technology that educates in learning has not been widely applied; 2) understanding the characteristics of students and effective learning in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 is not yet fully mastered by teachers, and 3) teacher enthusiasm in community service activities. In this regard, it is essential to study more deeply about teachers as lifelong learners who have high enthusiasm in developing themselves. The teacher also needs to understand the characteristics of students, so they can educate them appropriately. Furthermore, it is also necessary to understand that education is a system in which all components are integrated for the operation of the system. For the creation of a good education, all factors in education need to be considered.","PeriodicalId":188419,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Academic Conference on Teaching, Learning, and Education","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122468333","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This survey followed up the potential differences in the ideology between the students from the old education system (OES) and the new education system (NES). A longitudinal study was conducted from 2013 to 2018, surveying some university students from OES and NES. Preliminary findings revealed that there was a statistically significant drop (p<0.05) in the overall satisfaction of NES students; whose average satisfaction score was 5.35 (SD=1.15), as compared with OES students (6.04, SD=1.45). Interestingly, when we compared senior Biochemistry students (SBS) from OES, their score (6.81, SD=1.15) was significantly higher than 6.04 (p<0.05). In NES, the gap between SBS and other students narrowed down to make no significant difference. Qualitatively, our findings suggested that NES students were less satisfied with physical health, society and politics, living standard, and personal values, when compared with OES students; yet, they were more satisfied with career, interpersonal relationship, and leisure activities. When SBS from NES were concerned, they were relatively more satisfied with physical health and generic skills; nonetheless, they were less satisfied with personal values, and leisure activities in particular. Taken together, the preliminary results implied that there was an overall decline of student satisfaction under the NES; whereas SBS's figures seemed to remain stable, although there were some specific variations observed. Educationists should pay attention to address and satisfy the basic needs and ideology of our students.","PeriodicalId":188419,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Academic Conference on Teaching, Learning, and Education","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127346057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
