In a first attempt towards a rigorous comparison of protocol performance under the exact same settings, we have developed in 2016 a prototype benchmarking infrastructure called D-Cube, and used it to run the first of a series of competitions aiming to quantitatively assess the performance of low-power wireless protocols in specific scenarios. Given the success of the competition among both academia and industry, we have significantly extended the benchmarking infrastructure in the following two editions: D-Cube now also supports, among others, remote experimentation, multiple traffic patterns and loads, a custom description of how to derive performance metrics, and is further able to control the network density as well as the harshness of the RF environment. In this paper we perform a critical analysis of the current capabilities of D-Cube and argue that its main limiting factor is that the traffic patterns and node identities are manually embedded in the source code by developers and cannot be changed automatically. We show that we can overcome this limitation by utilizing a well-known data structure and by having developers describe its memory address using a configuration file that is passed to the benchmarking infrastructure. Following this concept, we extend D-Cube with the ability of building and applying patches to binary files and show that this allows not only to automatically change traffic patterns and node identities, but to also change user-defined protocol parameters. We believe that this extension is one of the last missing stepping stones to make D-Cube a full-fledged benchmarking infrastructure for low-power wireless systems.","PeriodicalId":184792,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Networks and Systems (CPSBench)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115849835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cyber-physical system (CPS), however, integrates control with network elements, which must be evaluated together under real-world conditions to assess control performance, stability, and associated costs. We present an approach to evaluate CPS relying on embedded devices and low-power wireless technology. Using one or multiple inverted pendulums as physical system, our approach supports a spectrum of realistic CPS scenarios that impose different requirements onto the control and networking elements. Moreover, our approach allows one to flexibly combine simulated and real pendulums, promoting adoption, scalability, repeatability, and integration with existing wireless testbed infrastructures. A case study demonstrates implementation, execution, and measurements using the proposed evaluation approach.","PeriodicalId":184792,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Networks and Systems (CPSBench)","volume":"537 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124254231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A standardization group of the same name within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has been working on a zero-configuration, IPv6-enabled solution applicable to industrial monitoring and control, smart building, home, city and agriculture. The base standardization work is virtually done. Before different stakeholders invest significant resources in developing and deploying 6TiSCH-based solutions, they need to have a certain level of assurance about whether the technology indeed meets their requirements. An unbiased performance benchmark of a standards-compliant 6TiSCH solution is therefore required by the industry, the research community and the standardization group. 6TiSCH Open Data Action (SODA) is a research project that will provide a 6TiSCH benchmark and open datasets in different industry relevant scenarios. SODA will automate the experimentation on these scenarios so benchmarking can remain up-to-date with changes to the standards, and facilitate comparison with future technological developments, resulting in continuous delivery benchmarking. This paper introduces the SODA project and seeks community involvement on the definition of scenarios and Key Performance Indicators, and on the usage of the tools that will be provided.","PeriodicalId":184792,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Networks and Systems (CPSBench)","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133836645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its growing significance for phone-to-peripheral communication, BLE's smartphone system performance characteristics are not well understood. As others, we experienced mixed erratic performance results in our BLE based smartphone-centric applications. In these applications, developers can only access low-level functionalities through multiple layers of OS and hardware abstractions. We propose an experimental framework for such systems, with which we perform experiments on a variety of modern smartphones. Our evaluation characterizes existing devices and gives new insight about peripheral parameters settings. We show that BLE performances vary significantly in non-trivial ways, depending on SoC and OS with a vast impact on applications.","PeriodicalId":184792,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Networks and Systems (CPSBench)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130676594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is known that NLoS propagation of electromagnetic waves can severely affect the localization accuracy. Despite the interest in indoor localization performance, it is still difficult to compare results from different studies without proper evaluation standards. Understanding the types of materials used in a testing environment could be a proper technique for benchmarking different localization solutions in different scenarios. We provide a systematic study to investigate effects of signal refraction and attenuation on UWB signals in different construction materials by examining the Channel Impulse Response (CIR) and ranging accuracy. Further, we present failure scenarios for common NLoS identification and mitigation techniques.","PeriodicalId":184792,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Networks and Systems (CPSBench)","volume":"104 25","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131913822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, both domains involved in an NCS, network and control, are considered separately. Towards a novel methodology for benchmarking such systems, we propose a series of key performance indicators (KPIs) that are based on well-established foundations of both worlds. These KPIs form our framework for the development of an NCS benchmark. The majority of KPIs, particularly those from the network domain, are applicable to any type of NCS. We are currently implementing an evaluation platform based on Lego Mindstorms to demonstrate and apply our framework. Both the benchmarking framework and our platform are designed with high affordability and easy reproducibility in mind. We plan to release our source code and construction manuals to motivate others to recreate our benchmark.","PeriodicalId":184792,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Networks and Systems (CPSBench)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127164954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimized benchmark sets reduce the number of tests that need to be performed, which ultimately reduces costs. In this paper, we propose a new methodology to provide automated assistance for optimizing existing benchmarks or for creating new ones from scratch. The proposed methodology is based on complete Symbolic Execution of a single control loop iteration, optionally expanded with a Nondeterministic Finite Automaton (NFA) model that represents possible changes in the environment or the system in between control loop iterations. This enables us to compute a stress number that represents the computational burden put upon the controller by a respective benchmark. By iteratively searching for benchmarks with high stress numbers and automatically detecting and pruning benchmarks that induce the same path through the controller code, we can ultimately create a minimal set of relevant benchmarks for a CPS.","PeriodicalId":184792,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Networks and Systems (CPSBench)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130292301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
