In the Background . . . Spring quarter, 1949, brought another Veishea to the Iowa State Campus. \"Veishea Salutes Science\" was the motto for the festive occasion. John Edenburn and Ray Dankenbring were elected president and vice president of the student body in the allcollege election. T h e Cyclones kept busy with baseball games, track meets, tennis matches and golf games. Veishea brought dances, Veishea Vodvil, Open houses, \"Stars Over Veishea\" and canoe races, plus all the other excitement of those three wonderful days. Members of the Theater Workshop busied themselves by presenting \"Papa is All\" by Patterson Greene. Sketch sponsored Books and Cokes, a regular program of book reviews. Presented Spring quarter were: \"Magic Mountain\"—Dorothy Shields \"Woman With a Sword\"—Chris Brogotti \"Lust for Life—Margaret Leveson \"Mister Roberts\"—Lawrence Kennedy \"Cry, Beloved Country\"—Janet Dunlevy \"U.S.A.\"-Neal Mehler \"Point of No Return\"—Edwin Sidey \"Brave New World\"—John Smith Burl Ives, \"the wayfaring stranger\" gave a concert of his famous ballads and folk songs dur ing this quarter. Members of the Radio Workshop dramatized the \"Wizard of Oz\" on Radio station W O I . Members of the student body voted that registration fees shoidd be raised $3, so that the Iowa State Coliseum could be built. T h e coliseum will be used for sports events, concerts, stage events and all-college dances. Students and faculty took advantage of the Story County X-ray campaign which made its first stop at Iowa State. T h e program was sponsored by the Story County Tuberculosis and Health Association in an effort to wipe out tuberculosis. Plans and construction were well under way for W O I television, the first station to receive a permit for television in Iowa.
