Writing is an important skill that includes creative thinking, refining, organizing, and editing ideas to have effective communication. However, due to its artificial nature, writing is a skill that should be enhanced by means of constant practice. Therefore, it can be challenging for both native speakers and second language learners to produce a proper writing task. With the development of technology, many programs have emerged like Ms. Word processor and Grammarly which can be used to create and edit writing. Many studies discussed the advantages and disadvantages of pen-and-paper writing and computer-assisted writing. Pen-and-paper writing can have a positive effect on the motor skills and cognitive development of the students; while computer-assisted writing can improve the writing quality and skills of the learners. However, these results could be affected by, for instance, the incompetency of students with the use of word processors.","PeriodicalId":154417,"journal":{"name":"Language and Technology","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129951277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aims to investigate the feelings of English instructors assigned to give synchronous online lessons at university during emergency remote teaching, to explore the reasons for their anxiety and whether their feelings and sources of anxiety differ according to age and years of teaching experience. As for the method, a sequential exploratory mixed-method research design was employed. Initially, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven English instructors and the data were analyzed through content analysis. Then, a questionnaire was developed based on the findings obtained from the interviews and the relevant literature. Sixty-three English instructors responded to the questionnaire and SPSS was used to analyze the quantitative data. Both qualitative and quantitative findings indicated that sudden conversion to remote teaching created anxiety and negative feelings were dominant in the beginning. Sense of inadequacy, lack of interaction opportunities and the fear of not being able to meet students’ needs were found to be the major causes for the instructors’ concerns. The results obtained from the study may offer clues to improve the effectiveness of synchronous online education and professional development activities for English instructors.","PeriodicalId":154417,"journal":{"name":"Language and Technology","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134073252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it becomes more challenging when it is taught in second or foreign language classrooms. For that reason, the present study aims to investigate the role of two-way information gap tasks on students’ motivation in a speaking lesson in an ESP context. The participants are students in a two-year civil aviation program. The goal of the program is to educate students to become qualified employees in the aviation sector. Therefore, students are taught how to communicate with foreign passengers in various situations ranging from providing a comfortable flight to dealing with flight emergencies using English. To that end, an open-ended motivation questionnaire adapted from Wallace and Leong (2020) was given to the students. The questionnaire inquired the students’ feelings towards English, and their perceptions about whether tasks motivated them or prepared them for their professions. Following the initial examination of the answers in the questionnaire, interview questions were formulated with the aim of enriching the data, and one on one interviews were conducted with the students on a voluntary basis. The data were analysed, and the emerging themes were discussed in relation to the research questions formulated for the purposes of this study. The results revealed positive feelings and perception towards tasks. Most of the students found tasks motivating and fun. The most salient finding was the students’ perception of tasks as preparatory work for the future due to the instrumental motivation that they had.","PeriodicalId":154417,"journal":{"name":"Language and Technology","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127979149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, Palestinian students feel the compounding effects of an ongoing occupation paired with a global pandemic. This study observes Palestinian university students and instructors perceptions toward using online learning applications and the extent to which these applications meet Institute of Higher Education Policy (IHEP) benchmarks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers used a quantitative tool to collect data from students and instructors from twelve Palestinian universities. For data collection, two online questionnaires were distributed. The sample of this study consisted of 375 students and instructors from different Palestinian universities. The results show that instructors agree that online learning meets most IHEP benchmarks. Whereas, students don’t agree that online learning meets IHEP benchmarks.","PeriodicalId":154417,"journal":{"name":"Language and Technology","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117241348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
